With over 30,000 customers — including a third of the Fortune 500 — Tempo is trusted by organizations around the world to make work visible, predictable, and impactful.

We build a powerful suite of integrated solutions across time tracking, capacity & resource planning, strategic portfolio management, roadmapping, program management, and reporting. Our products help modern teams plan with confidence and execute with clarity — from strategy through delivery.

From our roots as the #1 time-tracking solution for Jira, Tempo has grown into one of the most trusted names in the Atlassian ecosystem. We’re a remote-first company that values craft, collaboration, and building products with heart.

About the Role

We’re looking for a hands-on Director of Legal / Head of Legal to serve as the company’s primary in-house legal partner during an important growth phase. This role is designed for a seasoned commercial SaaS lawyer who enjoys breadth, ownership, and pragmatism — someone who can move quickly, exercise judgment, and scale legal processes without over-engineering.

What you'll do

Commercial & Product Legal

  • Own and negotiate SaaS commercial agreements, including MSAs, SOWs, DPAs, partner agreements, reseller and marketplace contracts

  • Advise on product terms, pricing models, and go-to-market motions

  • Support procurement and vendor contracting

  • Balance speed and risk appropriately for a high-growth SaaS business

Privacy, Security & IP

  • Support privacy compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) in partnership with Security and Product

  • Review and manage DPAs and security addenda

  • Advise on IP matters, licensing, open-source usage, and product development issues

Employment & People Legal

  • Advise on employment matters (U.S. and limited international), including policies, employee agreements, and terminations

  • Partner closely with HR on people-related legal questions

  • Manage immigration/EOR-related issues as needed (via outside counsel)

Corporate & Governance

  • Support routine corporate legal needs (subsidiaries, filings)

  • Partner with Finance on compliance, risk management, and audit-related legal questions

  • Coordinate with outside counsel where appropriate and manage spend thoughtfully

Outside Counsel Management

  • Triage what should be handled internally vs. externally

  • Help reduce legal spend through better scoping and internal ownership

Who you are

  • 7–10 years of legal experience, ideally with:

    • SaaS / enterprise software companies

    • Strong commercial contracting background

  • Broad legal exposure across commercial, privacy, employment, IP, and corporate

  • Practical, business-oriented mindset — knows when to push and when to move

  • Comfortable operating as a team of one (with outside counsel support)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience working closely with Finance, Product, Sales, and HR

  • JD and active bar membership in good standing

Nice to Have
  • Experience with marketplace, partner, or platform ecosystems

  • Prior experience working with PE-backed or scaling companies

Why This Role
  • High visibility and impact across the business

  • Opportunity to build scalable legal foundations without bureaucracy

  • Direct partnership with executive leadership

  • Room to grow with the company over time

Why Join Tempo?

  • Impact: Work on meaningful products that empower enterprise users and improve productivity.

  • Innovation: Be part of a culture that values creativity and innovation, with opportunities to make a real impact.

  • Collaboration: Join a supportive, collaborative UX team that values openness, communication, and a continuous learning environment.

  • Growth: Opportunities for professional development, including conferences, courses, and mentorship.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
