The Director of Legal will oversee Archive's legal compliance, manage contracts, mitigate risks, and provide strategic legal advice to support the company's growth.

We are seeking a highly driven and adaptable Director of Legal to oversee Archive's legal and compliance function. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring legal compliance, managing contracts, mitigating risks, and providing strategic legal advice to support Archive’s growth. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the legal foundation of a rapidly scaling company at the forefront of branded resale.
Responsibilities
- Legal Compliance: Ensure the company's operations and activities comply with all relevant laws and regulations in the US and all regions where Archive operates. Promote legal, compliance and risk management best practice throughout the company. Create, monitor, and update the Terms of Use and Privacy Policies across our white-labeled sites, as necessary
- Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including partnership agreements, vendor contracts, and licensing agreements. Work with Archive's brand-facing functions in brand negotiations.
- Risk Management: Identify potential legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate them, providing proactive advice to the leadership team. Provide advice to Archive’s leaders and staff on a variety of legal topics that relate to our resale, ecommerce, consumer protections, privacy, tax, and other business relevant areas.
- Corporate Governance: Advise on corporate governance matters, including board meetings, corporate policies, and compliance with corporate laws. Identify and work with external counsel to support expansion into new geographies, determining the legal and registration requirements to set up and conduct business abroad
- Intellectual Property: Manage and protect the company's intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
- Employment Law: Provide guidance on employment-related legal issues, including hiring practices, employee relations, and compliance with labor laws.
- Dispute Resolution: Oversee and manage any litigation or disputes involving the company, working with external counsel, as necessary.
Requirements
- 4+ years of proven legal experience, including time at both a law firm and in-house at a growing startup.
- J.D. or equivalent legal degree required.
- Background in the technology industry, with experience across a variety of legal areas such as corporate, commercial contracts, intellectual property, privacy, and tax law..
- Familiarity with local and international privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), particularly as they relate to e-commerce, consumer experience, and digital products.
- Strong track record of providing pragmatic, business-minded legal advice.
- Comfortable operating as both a strategic leader and hands-on contributor in a fast-paced environment as the sole in-house Legal employee.
- Able to react quickly and appropriately to urgent matters.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to distill complex legal issues into practical recommendations.
- Collaborative and effective in cross-functional environments, aligning legal guidance with business objectives.
Compensation varies based on a variety of factors which include (but aren’t limited to) role level, skills and competencies, qualifications, knowledge, and experience. In addition to base pay, certain roles are eligible for equity as well, and all employees are eligible for a full benefits package including employee and dependent healthcare and 401(k) enrollment. Our team of over 50 employees is currently remote-first, with an office in NYC and optional in-person work for those located in the area. We have company offsites twice a year to bring the full team together in person, and occasional travel is expected as part of the job.
