As a Director of Engineering at Lob, you will be a key leader, partnering closely with our product organization to define the vision, strategy, and execution for a core area of our API-first services. On a typical day, you will be coaching and mentoring your engineering managers and team members, guiding them to build scalable, resilient, and secure microservice ecosystems. You will spend time translating high-level business opportunities into clear, actionable engineering initiatives and collaborating with executive leadership to manage risks and set organizational expectations. Your focus will be on nurturing a psychologically safe, high-performance culture where diverse individuals can do the best work of their lives, all while championing operational excellence across your domain.
As the Director of Engineering, you'll…
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to your teams, fostering a culture of high cooperation and psychological safety.
- Shape the architectural vision to scale Lob's extensible, secure, and resilient platform in a cloud-native environment.
- Translate business objectives into clear engineering strategies, and manage risks and tradeoffs for complex project delivery.
Work to be accomplished in the first 6 months:
- Define and drive the strategic technical roadmap for your domain in partnership with Product.
- Establish key metrics for engineering quality and velocity, and implement processes to champion operational excellence.
- Successfully recruit and onboard key engineering talent to expand team capacity and diversity.
Work to be accomplished in the first 12 months:
- Deliver a key, impactful product capability that illustrates clear business value and delights our customers.
- Implement significant architectural improvements that enhance the scalability, security, or resilience of your services.
- See demonstrably measurable growth and development in your direct reports and broader team members.
What will you bring to this role…
- 5+ years of experience managing and leading teams in a technology-led organization (bonus: in a B2B SaaS environment).
- Required Hard Skills:
- Expertise scaling microservice ecosystems in a cloud-native environment (containers/serverless).
- Proven ability to translate business goals into technical strategy and execution plans.
- Strong track record of championing engineering and operational excellence.
- Required Soft Skills:
- Exceptional verbal and written communication, able to articulate technical impact to non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated proficiency in "Coach, don't tell" leadership and giving direct, kind feedback.
- Proven ability to attract, engage, and retain diverse, high-performing problem-solvers.

Compensation information
Base: $215,000 - $260,000

“Lob’s salary ranges are based on market data, relative to our size, industry and stage of growth. Salary is one part of total compensation, which also includes equity, perks and competitive benefits. Salary decisions are based on many factors including geographic location, qualifications for the role, skillset, proficiency and experience level.
