Director of Engineering

PlanHub is the leading pre-construction SaaS platform and marketplace helping general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers connect and grow their businesses. Built with tradespeople in mind, PlanHub is designed around the user workflow to help boost productivity, maintain deadlines, increase revenue, and create relationships. Easily post projects or submit bids with anytime-anywhere collaboration for every commercial construction trade.

We are seeking a high-performing, detail-oriented Director of Engineering to lead the execution and evolution of our SaaS platform. This is a critical leadership role blending tactical delivery execution with strategic engineering leadership, responsible for ensuring high-quality, timely releases aligned with our roadmap and business objectives.

You will lead and grow a team of Engineering Managers and Individual Contributors (ICs), overseeing the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) while partnering closely with Product Management, Customer Success, Support, and Go-to-Market teams. You’ll also contribute to our modernization strategy, including the evolution of our architecture, adoption of AI/ML, and implementation of secure, scalable, and resilient cloud-native solutions.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Own and drive the planning and delivery of product and engineering roadmaps, ensuring proper resourcing and delivery on commitments.
  • Implement and evolve metrics-driven practices to improve engineering velocity, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure adherence to secure coding, scalable design, and performance best practices across the platform.
  • Oversee architectural reviews and design quality across projects—ensuring scalability, resilience, and maintainability.
  • Engage in code reviews, architectural evaluations, and design sessions.
  • Support adoption of AI/ML components and modern platform technologies.
  • Manage and mentor Engineering Managers and senior ICs, developing their technical and leadership capabilities.
  • Foster a high-performance culture centered on ownership, accountability, and excellence.
  • Promote continuous improvement via structured retrospectives, process improvements, and feedback loops.
  • Lead modernization initiatives including re-architecture, service decomposition, infrastructure-as-code, and DevOps automation.
  • Drive adoption of AWS-native services (e.g., Aurora, Lambda, ECS/EKS, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, etc.).
  • Champion cloud-native engineering, secure development, and DevOps/SRE best practices.
  • Act as a senior counterpart to Product Management, Customer Success, Support, and Sales Engineering.
  • Participate in quarterly and sprint planning to align engineering priorities with business outcomes.
  • Represent Engineering in executive discussions around OKRs, tech debt, innovation, and delivery health.

What you’ll need on day one:

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in engineering leadership (Director or Senior EM).
  • Proven experience in SaaS platform development and delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage managers and senior ICs in distributed teams.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS infrastructure and cloud-native architectures.
  • Experience with OLTP databases (ideally Aurora/MySQL or Postgres).
  • Hands-on technical background: ability to review code, critique architectures, and guide design choices.
  • Expertise in implementing and scaling metrics-driven SDLC processes.
  • Solid understanding of DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and incident management.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML product integration and collaboration with Data Science teams.
  • Deep commitment to security best practices, including secure SDLC, secrets management, and access controls.
  • Driver mindset with bias for action and ownership.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision while aligning to executive goals.
  • Comfortable challenging the status quo, proposing improvements, and executing change.
  • Strong stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration

What will make you stand out:

  • Experience modernizing legacy monoliths into service-oriented or microservice-based architectures.
  • Exposure to AI/ML platforms (e.g., SageMaker, Bedrock, Vertex AI, or equivalent).
  • Experience working in private equity-backed SaaS environments or growth-stage companies.

What's in it for you:

The opportunity to join a dynamic team that landed into the top list of Inc. 5000 in 2024 You can make an immediate impact as PlanHub moves to dominate the industry!

PlanHub offers:

  • An awesome culture where you will be empowered, make an impact, and learn a ton.
  • Flexible time-off policy.
  • An excellent benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 401(k)/RRSP plan with company match.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
