Vantor is seeking a Director of Engineering Transformation to join the Spatial Application Foundry (SAF) pillar of the Central Technology Organization (CTO). In this role, you will lead multiple efforts to challenge, update, adapt and, when necessary, entirely re-design engineering processes, production pipelines, and implementation methods that have impact across Vantor’s entire product portfolio. A successful candidate for this position should be ready to harness the transformative set of model tools available to the software industry today, including but not limited to AI acceleration systems, to rapidly advance Vantor practice with the goals of increasing product margins and improving developer productivity. Candidates must have prior experience in determining and utilizing quantifiable metrics, implementing organizational level change management, and advocacy for new approaches. Candidates must also have prior experience with geospatial imagery collection, processing and dissemination as the timeline for implementing improvements will not allow for meaningful ramp up time to learn the technology and methods utilized by Vantor today in prosecuting its business model. Significant travel (approximately 33%) is expected to multiple Vantor sites to coordinate, direct, and advocate for new approaches.

Responsibilities:

· Investigate current development approaches and production methods to identify areas where transformative change can impart business benefit

· Develop rigorous plans for implementing transformative change projects that pull in support and resources from multiple siloed functional areas

· Optimize SDLC in Engineering functions utilizing new tools and methods

· Identify approaches to accelerate adoption of AI tools and methods across all functions

· Assume a change agent role; identify and amplify other change agents within CTO

· Identify relevant quantifiable metrics and track against those metrics to chart the progress of transformation projects

· Assist with optimizing cloud architecture and operating methods to reduce costs

Leadership Expectations:

· Motivate and counsel engineering managers on the importance of new technology adoption

· Encourage and train engineers on proper uses and limits of new technology adoption

· Advocate for new transformation ideas despite the inertia of existing approaches

· Manage expectations of senior executives with practical projects and consistent progress reporting

· Develop a strong network within Vantor technical leadership team

· Be scrappy about achieving results despite the natural limitations on available resources

Minimum Requirements:

· Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability and willingness to obtain a security clearance

· Bachelor's degree. A master’s degree can be counted as two years of experience

· Minimum 15 years of experience including program management of large-scale engineering/manufacturing programs

· Ability to travel in support of projects, training, and customer initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

· Geospatial processing and production experience

· Experience with USG geospatial program execution

· Knowledge of government and commercial geospatial, missions, systems, and requirements, and be able to strategize unique solutions.

· Experience leading a matrixed team of engineering professionals in solving challenging problems and working on complex systems

· Experience in transitioning engineering organization to optimize use of AI to drive efficiency

· Experience in optimizing engineering organizations work planning, execution and reporting processes

· A sense of urgency

· A bias for action

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
