The Job:What does a Director of Engineering do?

A director of engineering is the head of the engineering team. This position is responsible to direct and develop activities, programs, and teams for multiple and/or major software products and is accountable for the on-time delivery of high-quality products to meet market Convoso Business and market needs. Including developing and implementing policies and procedures and developing and managing multiple teams of engineering working simultaneously on different projects.

What are the Responsibilities of a Director of Engineering?
  • Direct Engineering teams to ensure process efficiency, effective resource allocation, product quality, and achievement of milestones and deadlines. 
  • Identify and track metrics that can be used to ensure quality objectives are met and recommend process improvements. 
  • Conduct the team's performance management and foster a culture of operational excellence
  • Fully engage and contribute to engineering leadership to drive best practices in software development, testing, improvement of production deployment, and knowledge sharing effort.
  • Own, maintain and improve the existing Convoso software services, APIs, and web applications. Provide feedback in design reviews and code reviews. Continuously improve the team's technical expertise and product knowledge.
  • Work with Product Management and Business Analyst to understand and plan for future product release requirements and to ensure the promotion of new features and product value.
  • Lead, grow, and coach the engineering team, support their career growth, and ensure they are connected to the outcomes and purpose of their work. 
  • Work closely with tech leads and Engineering teams to leverage best practices across multiple product lines. 
  • Fully engage and contribute to engineering leadership to drive best practices in software development, testing, improvement of production deployment, and knowledge sharing effort.
  • Meet with customers and other stakeholders to discuss their technical issues and requirements. 
  • Determine and recommend methods to streamline and improve development processes and procedures. 
  • Speak externally regarding the Company's technology and product-specific topics. 
  • May lead Sustaining Engineering teams. 
  • Determine critical priorities and monitor and control the activities and performance of staff to achieve objectives. 
  • Ensure staff understands corporate policies and procedures. 
  • Ensure appropriately qualified and/or experienced personnel are recruited and trained.    
  • Communicate frequently with equivalent level managers or senior outside contacts concerning projects, operational decisions, or commitments. 
  • Assist executive-level personnel with corporate projects/initiatives as required. 
  • Handle escalations and all higher-level management issues. 
  • If asked to be a core team member, perform the following additional responsibilities: 
  • Participate in product planning throughout the product life cycle 
    • Conduct technical/function reviews for their function 
    • Engage with extended team members as needed 
    • Contribute and execute with excellence their component of the Integrated Business Plan, Integrated Project Plan, and the Integrated Launch Plan 
    • Accountable for the business success of the project 
    • Resolve product and process issues 
    • Effectively communicate throughout and across the organizations at all levels (peers, subordinates, management, executives)
  • Collaborate with QA:
    • Keep them humming with continuous QA
    • Help them understand the test cases and expected functionality
    • Assist them with hard to reproduce issues.
    • Offer assistance in estimating the QA effort.
  • Collaborate with DevOps:
    • Understand hardware requirements and constraints
    • Ensure the two teams do not bottleneck each other during cross-departmental projects
    • Understand how the engineering project fits into the broader technology environment and ensure DevOps is prepared to support engineering projects.
  • Collaborate with Product:
    • Provide research time and technical details for PRDs completion
    • Identify edge cases
    • Identify roadblocks, 3rd party dependencies and plan accordingly
  • Collaborate with CS:
    • Ensure timely replies to their issues and concerns
    • Keep them updated on the status
What you'll Bring:
  • BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
  • 5+ years experience as a Software Engineer Manager leading multiple teams with a passion for automation and continuous improvement
  • 3+ years experience in the operational management of SaaS production applications
  • 3+ years working with Agile Development methodology
  • Results-oriented.  Focuses on delivering results, not the activity.
  • Data-driven.  Ability to analyze complex data and develop innovative recommendations and solutions.
  • Excellent planning, organizing, and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Good people and line management skills and the ability to recruit and develop a high performing team
  • Process-oriented with great documentation skills

Compensation:
The base salary range is: $180,000 - $200,000

The Base Pay Range for this position is based on the industry benchmark for position, function, level and the company's compensation strategies. However, final offers may vary from the amount listed based on geography, candidate experience and expertise, and other objective business. Convoso’s compensation package also includes equity for all eligible U.S full time roles and exceptional benefits, including generous 401k match.
