About the Job:

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our Monetization group. Our Monetization group consists of two teams:

  • The Billing and Internal Systems team drives LaunchDarkly’s monetization strategies and invests in areas such as pricing and packaging, account management and provisioning, usage-based billing, and quote-to-cash systems.

  • The Growth Team drives the trajectory of the business’s leads and revenue by inflecting its top-of-funnel acquisition and trial activation.

In this role, you’ll be able to drive our monetization-focused teams while defining their strategy and driving their execution. You’ll balance technical leadership, business acumen, and people management as you drive the teams towards successful outcomes alongside your cross-functional peers.

Responsibilities:
  • Execution: Guide engineering strategy and execution across our Monetization teams, including collaboration with other cross-functional stakeholders and GTM partners (like AEs, Finance, PMM, and execs) to deliver great outcomes for our business.

  • Cross-functional communication and stakeholder management: Translate technical concepts to GTM partners, engage in strategic business discussions around pricing and monetization, and represent the engineering team with clarity and business awareness.

  • Engineering decisions that scale with the business: Understand how engineering decisions impact revenue and business strategy, and how common SaaS business metrics like ARR, NRR, and ACV can inform engineering planning and prioritization.

  • Organizational building: Manage and mentor senior leaders, cultivate high-performing, high-agency, inclusive teams, and scale the org to meet evolving product needs.

  • Recruiting and retention of top talent: Own the hiring strategy — spanning decisions on new locations to changing interview loops to building a diverse pipeline and inclusive culture that also embraces experimentation with AI-tooling.

  • Principled values: Model and evangelize a leadership style rooted in transparency, ownership, curiosity, and a bias for action.

Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of experience in engineering leadership roles, including at least 3+ years leading managers or multiple engineering teams.

  • Strong architectural understanding of billing and usage platforms, backend services, and cloud-native infrastructure.

  • Experience defining monetization strategies and modeling business impacts to metrics like ARR, NRR, and ACV.

  • Experience operating a usage-based billing model at scale.

  • Experience working with third-party billing platforms like Orb and Stripe for capabilities such as SKU management, plan enforcement, entitlements, billing integration, and usage metering.

  • Demonstrated success scaling teams through multiple phases of company growth.

  • The ability to track and drive metrics, and the wisdom to understand what they can and can't tell you.

  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • A thoughtful, empathetic approach to leadership and collaboration.

  • Prior experience at a product-led SaaS or DevTools company is a plus.

About LaunchDarkly:

Modern software delivery was supposed to be the foundation for a thriving digital business but reality has proven otherwise. Slow, inefficient development cycles, costly outages, and fragmented customer experiences are preventing developers from building their best software. The LaunchDarkly platform helps developers innovate on new features faster while protecting them with a safety valve to instantly rewind when things go wrong. Developers can target product experiences to any customer segment and maximize the business impact of every feature. And by gradually rolling out new application components, they escape nightmare "big-bang" technology migrations.

The LaunchDarkly platform was built to guide engineers to the next frontier of DevOps by:

  • Improving the velocity and stability of software releases, without the fear of end customer outages
  • Delivering targeted experiences by easily personalizing features to customer cohorts
  • Maximizing the business impact of every feature through the ability to experiment and optimize
  • Coordinating the release and optimization of software to provide consistent experiences across mobile platforms and device types
  • Improving the effectiveness and productivity of engineering teams, by providing insights into engineering cadence and stability

At LaunchDarkly, we believe in the power of teams. We're building a team that is humble, open, collaborative, respectful and kind. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. LD invites any applicant to review our written Affirmative Action Plan. To do so, contact People Ops at [email protected]

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
