As the company modernizes its technology stack and expands cloud capabilities, it’s investing in engineering talent to lead this transformation.
About the Role:
We're seeking a hands-on Director of Engineering to lead the transformation of our flagship optometry EHR and practice management application. This critical role requires a strategic leader who can guide the modernization of a complex legacy Windows application stack, while architecting and delivering a next-generation, cloud-native platform.
You’ll be responsible for shaping our technical direction, building and mentoring a high-caliber engineering team, and collaborating closely with our product, support, and leadership teams to ensure we continue to deliver secure, reliable, and innovative solutions to thousands of providers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Modernization Strategy & Execution: Lead the transition of a WinForms/.NET 4.5 monolith into a modern, modular architecture using .NET 8+, WPF and web technologies like React, Vue.js and TypeScript.
- New Platform Development: Architect and oversee the development of a new cloud-native product built on a scalable services architecture, integrating modern database, caching, and deployment strategies.
- Team Building & Leadership: Hire and lead a growing team including senior Windows developers, UI/UX designers, and QA professionals. Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Process & Quality: Establish and champion engineering best practices around documentation, CI/CD, test automation, and secure software development.
- AI-Enhanced Development: Embrace and integrate commercial AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) into engineering workflows to accelerate coding, enhance feature delivery, and boost developer productivity.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with support, data transfer, and product teams to align modernization efforts with customer needs and technical feasibility.
- Technical Oversight: Ensure architectural decisions support multi-tenant design, observability, security, data protection, and long-term maintainability.
- 10+ years in software engineering with at least 5 years in technical leadership roles
- Deep expertise in Microsoft technologies: .NET Framework/.NET 8, WPF, MySQL and MariaDB
- Experience leading modernization of legacy codebases and transitioning to cloud-native architectures
- Strong grasp of software design patterns, MVVM, microservices, and frontend-backend decoupling
- Track record of hiring, mentoring, and scaling engineering teams
- Familiarity with GitHub-based workflows, and Agile methodologies
- Passion for improving technical processes, documentation, and developer productivity
- Nice to Have:
- Experience with Electron, Mobile App Dev, Redis, Docker and Kubernetes
- Background in healthcare, especially EHR systems or HIPAA-compliant applications
- Hands-on experience with observability tools and security frameworks (e.g., SentinelOne, SonarQube)
