About the Role

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering, Data Team to lead and scale our data organization, spanning Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, Data Analytics, and Data Science. You will oversee a multidisciplinary team responsible for building data infrastructure, defining core metrics, delivering business insights, and advancing machine learning capabilities across Platform Science.

In this role, you’ll drive the vision, strategy, and execution for our entire data stack—from scalable pipelines and modeling frameworks to analytics products and data science initiatives. You will play a critical role in enabling data-informed decision-making across Product, Engineering, and Executive teams, while fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and business impact.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow high-performing teams across Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, Data Analytics, and Data Science. Lead through both direct reports and managers to scale impact, foster collaboration, and support career development.
  • Define and execute a cohesive strategy for how Platform Science collects, models, stores, analyzes, and leverages data to drive product innovation and business decisions.
  • Ensure the Data team delivers measurable business value by connecting projects to product, revenue, efficiency, or customer impact goals.
  • Build and lead the Data Science function from the ground up, including hiring, infrastructure, tooling, and a roadmap focused on experimentation, applied ML, and intelligent product features.
  • Champion data quality, governance, privacy, and responsible usage, while supporting your managers in scaling best practices and tooling across teams.
  • Act as a thought partner to Product, Engineering, and Executive leaders, aligning cross-functional priorities, setting direction, and ensuring the data organization is positioned for long-term success.
  • Oversee the development and operation of reliable, scalable, and secure data platforms, including ingestion, processing, and orchestration pipelines that support real-time and batch use cases, by guiding senior engineers and empowering data engineering managers.
  • Direct the development of robust data models, semantic layers, and standardized metrics to power self-serve analytics and decision-making, in close partnership with analytics and engineering leads.
  • Guide analytics and data science teams in partnering with stakeholders to surface insights, define KPIs, and measure performance, while supporting analytics managers in growing strong relationships across the business.

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience designing, building, and operating modern data systems at scale
  • 5+ years leading high-performing data teams, including data engineers, analysts, and scientists at both individual contributor and managerial levels
  • 5+ years of hands-on programming experience, preferably in Python
  • Expertise with modern data technologies such as Airflow, dbt, and Snowflake (or equivalents)
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex business problems into data opportunities and shape product strategy through data-driven insights
  • Experience in growing new functions or scaling teams through inflection points
  • Experience with cloud native services
  • Exceptional communicator and inclusive people leader with a strong track record of building resilient, collaborative teams
  • Highly effective in cross-functional environments, partnering seamlessly with Product, Engineering, and Business stakeholders

Preferred Experience:

  • Proven experience delivering production-grade AI/ML solutions, including model deployment, monitoring, and integration into user-facing products
  • Deep proficiency with AWS data services, including tools such as Kinesis, MWAA, Lambda, ECS, and EKS

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
