Role Overview

As Director of DevEx / SRE, you lead a team of engineers focused on building and improving our core developer platform. You enable internal teams to compose services efficiently and securely, helping them deliver innovative and high-quality solutions. You drive improvements in the security, reliability, and observability of our systems while accelerating the velocity at which engineering teams can safely deploy code.

You take ownership of both high-level planning and hands-on technical leadership. You lead from the front—empowering engineers to do their best work through deep understanding of our platform and systems. You partner closely with engineering stakeholders to identify the tools and processes that enable teams to iterate quickly and confidently.

You bring a passion for scalable systems and DevOps best practices, especially in dynamic environments serving real users and data. You solve complex infrastructure challenges with creativity, technical depth, and a commitment to continuous learning. Your work directly impacts the speed and safety with which we serve our Pros.

What you do each day:

  • Oversee technical excellence, reliability, and scalability of internal software platforms and services.
  • Champion secure-by-design and compliance-conscious engineering practices in DevOps and deployment workflows
  • You understanding business priorities and guide work accordingly
  • You enable our DevOps, SRE, and Software engineers to ship rapidly and safely
  • Mentor engineers across disciplines on software and platform architecture best practices
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement

Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams, with a strong commitment to supporting and empowering those you lead.

  • Advocacy for DevOps culture, demonstrating dedication to building, maintaining, and scaling that culture across teams.

  • Strong Agile mindset, thriving in iterative environments, delivering value early, and coaching others to continuously improve their processes.

  • Data-driven decision-making, consistently seeking ways to generate meaningful data to inform strategic and operational choices.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex topics, listen effectively, provide constructive feedback, and remain composed under pressure.

  • Expertise in building scalable infrastructure and navigating dynamic, fast-changing environments with adaptability and precision.

  • Broad technical foundation spanning software engineering, site reliability engineering, automation, performance optimization, security, and operations.

  • Proficiency in high-level programming languages such as Ruby, Python, or JavaScript, leveraging them for automation and third-party API integrations.

  • Strong understanding of modern cloud infrastructure, including AWS ECS and Kubernetes, with extensive experience running containers in production.

  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, automating deployments and maintaining robust delivery processes using tools like GitLab CI, Travis CI, or CircleCI.

  • Solid knowledge of relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, with the ability to optimize queries and improve performance


What will help you succeed:

  • Experience implementing Canary Deploys, Blue/Green Deploys, automated production testing, or other tools that enable Continuous Deployment.
  • Solid understanding of both relational and NoSQL databases, knowing when to use each based on the problem at hand.
  • Experience working with distributed systems, understanding the tradeoffs between Consistency, Availability, and Partition Tolerance when designing in a distributed environment.

This role is open to candidates and the expected salary range for this role is $165,000 - $195,000+10% bonus. The specific salary for the successful candidate will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location. This role is also eligible to participate in Housecall Pro’s equity plan and the following benefits: health care insurance (medical, dental, vision, disability), employee assistance program, 401(K), flexible time off, paid parental leave, tech reimbursement, and other company benefits.
