Since 1977, Haven Hills has lifted up survivors of domestic violence to transform their lives. We offer shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy, and activities supporting increased economic opportunity for over 2,500 women and men each year. In doing so, we help survivors of domestic violence find the strength within themselves to break the cycle of abuse and build a new, productive, and joyful life for themselves and their children. 

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Director of Development (DOD) is a key member the leadership team, responsible for planning, directing, and executing a comprehensive development and communications strategy to support the organization's mission, programs, and long-term sustainability. This position leads all aspects of fundraising, including annual and major giving, corporate and foundation relations, special events, planned giving, and marketing and communications. The role also includes managing relationships with consultants and contract professionals supporting fundraising, marketing, events, and communications, ensuring their work aligns with organizational goals and brand standards. The Director of Development works collaboratively with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers to build a culture of philanthropy and ensure the organization meets or exceeds its fundraising goal 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership & Department Oversight

  • Serve as the chief development strategist, aligning fundraising goals with organizational strategy. 
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive annual fundraising plan and calendar. 
  • Provide leadership and supervision to staff, volunteers, and interns. 
  • Support the CEO and Board of Directors in donor cultivation and solicitation efforts. 
  • Participate as a member of the senior leadership team in organizational planning and initiatives. 
  • Represent Haven Hills at community events and meetings, as needed. 
  • Maintain donor records and ensure the integrity of data in DonorPerfect and related systems. 
  • Establish systems and best practices for prospect tracking, gift processing, and acknowledgment letters. 

Fund Development, Institutional Support, & Donor Stewardship

  • Manage and grow all aspects of individual giving, including annual giving, major gifts, and recurring donors. 
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with current and prospective donors, with a focus on increasing donor retention. 
  • Conduct prospect research and manage donor portfolios, developing tailored strategies for engagement. 
  • Research, identify, and apply for corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, and government funding opportunities in collaboration with program staff. 
  • Manage the grant calendar and ensure timely submission of high-quality proposals and reports. 
  • Develop mutually beneficial partnerships with corporations to support fundraising, cause marketing, and employee engagement. 

Marketing, Communications, & Events

  • Oversee all organizational communications, ensuring consistent branding and messaging across all platforms and aligning fundraising and messaging with programmatic impact. 
  • Manage the development of print and digital collateral, including newsletters, donor appeals, press releases, and promotional materials. 
  • Collaborate with staff to amplify program impact stories and media opportunities. 
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to support fundraising, donor engagement, and community awareness. 
  • Oversee strategy and content creation for social media platforms and the website. 
  • Lead the planning and execution of fundraising events, including Haven Hills’ 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2027.  
  • Evaluate event outcomes and recommend improvements for future events. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, or related field a plus. 
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising, including at least 2 years in a leadership role. 
  • Demonstrated success in securing individual, foundation, and corporate gifts. 
  • Experience planning and executing successful fundraising events. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including persuasive proposal and appeal writing. 
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with a diverse range of stakeholders. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. 
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and donor management software (DonorPerfect experience preferred). 
  • Knowledge of digital marketing tools, social media platforms, and online fundraising strategies. 
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Haven Hills and to anti-violence work. 
  • Valid California Driver’s License, insurance, and access to reliable transportation required. 

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary Range is $100,000–$120,000. The position is a hybrid position in Canoga Park, CA. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision partially covered, healthcare FSA, group life and AD&D insurance, paid time off, and a retirement saving plan with agency matching after one year.
