We’ve since scaled into new regions and industry verticals and expanded our product offerings to deliver meaningful value to our clients around the world.

Job Description

The Opportunity

As our Credit Risk Director, you will help architect our global credit risk strategy. You’ll lead the charge in balancing growth with sound risk management, ensuring that as we scale into new markets and complex verticals, our financial integrity remains unshakeable. We need a leader who is as comfortable with data modeling as they are with operations and high-level executive strategy.

What You’ll Do:

  • Own the Strategy: Design, implement, and iterate on a global credit risk framework that supports diverse verticals (education, healthcare, travel, and B2B).
  • Underwriting & Analysis: Oversee the underwriting process for new and existing clients, ensuring deep due diligence and financial health assessment.
  • Data-Driven Decisioning: Partner with our Analytics and Engineering teams to build automated credit scoring models and risk monitoring tools that leverage real-time payment data.
  • Portfolio Management & Continuous Account Monitoring: Create a robust, lifecycle-based monitoring program that moves beyond static reviews. You will implement granular, real-time account monitoring to track merchant financial health, settlement patterns, and transactional anomalies. By establishing a proactive Early Warning System, you will identify credit deterioration at the account level and lead decisive remediation or collateralization strategies to protect Flywire’s interests.
  • Global Expansion: Guide Flywire’s entry into new geographies by assessing local credit environments, regulatory requirements, and sovereign risk factors.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Act as a key advisor to the Sales and Product teams, helping them structure deals and develop features that mitigate risk and allow for profitable growth of our portfolio.

Qualifications

Here's what we're looking for:

  • The Seasoned Pro: You have 10+ years of experience in credit risk, ideally within Fintech, Payments, or Banking. You’ve seen a few market cycles and know how to navigate them.
  • The Strategic Thinker: You don't just identify risks; you identify solutions. You understand that "no" isn't always the answer—it's about "how."
  • A Data Native: You are highly analytical. While you don't need to be a coder, you should be able to speak the language of SQL, Python, or BI tools to drive insights.
  • An Exceptional Communicator: You can translate complex financial risk concepts into clear, actionable advice for non-finance stakeholders.
  • A Thoughtful People Leader: You encourage the growth and development of your team, knowing that their success is the company’s success.
  • Global in Mindset: You’ve managed risk across borders and understand the nuances of international trade and currency volatility, all while helping to profitably grow portfolios.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
