General Description:
The Director of Client Development for Emerging Companies & Venture Capital will collaborate with partners and business professionals to lead business development and marketing for emerging companies, venture funds, and other investors in technology and early-stage companies. This role is assigned to the CMAS practice group, with daily direction from designated partners. It also has a dotted line reporting relationship to the Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer to ensure coordination with the Firm's operational departments. Currently, this role requires weekly in-office attendance, as well as participation in occasional team meetings, training sessions, and firm-sponsored events.  

Key Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:

  • Assisting partners with winning new clients and expanding relationships with existing clients in the Emerging Companies/Venture Capital (“EC/VC”) space in coordination with lawyers and business professionals around the Firm who have pre-existing relationships with these clients.

  • Coordinating with partners to develop and help facilitate the Firm’s nationwide brand for EC/VC. 

  • Setting targets and achieving measurable results, including number of qualified leads converted to clients and assisting clients in securing investor introductions and meetings, among others. 

  • Ensuring a collaborative, productive relationship with the Firm's business development and marketing professionals to ensure alignment and coordination across all lead generation, branding, business development, and marketing activities, and to ensure compliance with the Firm’s policies, budgeting, and approval processes, and other relevant protocols and guidelines. 

  • Sourcing new client pitches.

  • Servicing existing clients. Those services will include, but are not limited to, reviewing client decks, facilitating investor introductions, and providing business-level guidance to clients based on our market intel and experience.

  • Participating personally in helping develop and redefine business development and marketing strategies for the EC/VC and other requested practices.

  • Participating personally in business development efforts, developing strategic relationships, and serving as an ambassador for the firm for the EC/VC practice.

  •  Participating personally in marketing efforts for the firm and the EC/VC practice.

  • Assisting in leading the marketing and business development plans for the EC/VC practice.

  • Identifying and participating along with firm attorneys in trade shows and conferences that will help develop and facilitate the Firm’s nationwide brand for the EC/VC practice.

  • Coordinating meetings with the nationwide EC/VC practice to establish and communicate goals, identify and share opportunities, and report on progress.

  • Working collaboratively with the “HK Deal Flow” team on new and existing client deals and matters as they may pertain to the EC/VC clients.

  • Collaborating with existing firm teams to develop and improve processes and systems.

  • Establishing and maintaining processes for regularly reporting progress relative to targets and budgets.

  • Collaborating with local and global marketing colleagues and fully aligning efforts with firm and practice area priorities.

  • Collaborating with the Firm's pitch and proposal team to develop customized pitches/RFPs and attend client (and potential client) meetings with firm lawyers, as requested.

  • Conducting after-the-fact analysis of business development meetings to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Coaching partners and designated associates on business development, demonstrating strong knowledge and understanding of the Firm's various practice groups and industry norms.

  • Maintaining a strong regional and national contact base and access to alumni, local associations, and industry associations.

  • Collaborating with the firm's research services group to gather competitive intelligence and research prospective clients.

  • Special projects and duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Marketing, or related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in business development or a related role.

  • Proven track record of successful project management.

  • Strong proficiency with CRM software and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to travel as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Moderate or advanced keyboard usage

This position may be filled in New York or California. The base salary ranges for this position are listed below. These ranges may not be applicable to other locations.  An individual's actual compensation will depend on the individual's qualifications and experience. In addition to the base compensation, Holland & Knight provides bonus opportunities and an exceptional benefits package.

  • New York City – $214,000 - $321,000/yr

  • California $214,000 - $321,000/yr
