Job Description:

As Director, Claims Risk Management, you will help shape enterprise claims risk oversight across Sun Life’s global operations. Working closely with senior Claims leaders, Risk Management, and business stakeholders, you will promote sound claims adjudication, identify emerging risks, and support improvements that keep claims practices aligned with Sun Life’s risk appetite.

This is an opportunity to influence enterprise claims standards, guide the evolution of claims risk management, and use data, analytics to generate meaningful insights.

You will be part of a collaborative global team that works across business units, products, and markets, providing independent oversight and trusted support to global claims operations.

What you'll be doing

  • Provide independent oversight of claims risk management practices across Sun Life’s global business units, helping ensure alignment with Enterprise Insurance Risk Policy, Claims Operating Guideline, and other relevant governance standards.
  • Lead risk validation testing and other monitoring programs to assess the effectiveness of claims controls, identify emerging risks, and support continuous improvement in claims adjudication and risk management practices.
  • Leverage claims data, analytics, and key risk indicators to identify trends, evaluate risk exposures, and provide actionable insights that support informed decision-making and strengthen risk oversight.
  • Partner with Claims, Underwriting, Medical, Risk, Compliance, Legal, Actuarial, and other global stakeholders to provide guidance and effective challenge on complex claims, emerging risks, strategic initiatives, and new technologies impacting claims operations.
  • Conduct research and maintain awareness of emerging industry trends, regulatory developments, and leading claims practices, and represent Sun Life in industry associations, forums, and working groups as appropriate.

What you'll need to succeed

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in Life, Health, or Disability claims adjudication, claims risk management, or a related field.
  • Deep understanding of claims adjudication practices, risk management principles, governance frameworks, and internal control environments.
  • Experience reviewing complex, high-value, or high-risk claims and applying sound risk judgment while supporting client-focused outcomes.
  • Track record of influencing and building strong partnerships across diverse stakeholder groups, including Claims, Underwriting, Medical, Risk, Legal, Compliance, and senior business leaders.
  • Skilled at providing independent, constructive challenge to first line recommendations to ensure decisions are well-supported, risk-informed, and aligned with governance expectations.
  • Comfortable using data, reporting, metrics, and trends to identify emerging risks, support decision-making, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Clear communicator with strong presentation and relationship management skills, able to turn complex issues into practical recommendations.
  • Proven experience leading initiatives, managing competing priorities, and delivering results in a global, collaborative environment.
  • Curious, thoughtful, and improvement-oriented, with a strong interest in advancing claims excellence and risk management practices.
  • Bilingual (French) is an asset.
  • Professional designations such as FLMI, FLHC, CRM, or other relevant insurance or risk management credentials are considered an asset.
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
