Haystack News is the leading news video streaming app, serving millions of users across the United States. While we have established ourselves as a leading distributor of news content, we are just beginning to experiment with original content creation. This role will be the first to roll up their sleeves and drive our original content experiments, helping to shape and define our future in this exciting new area. We’re redefining how people consume news by blending cutting-edge technology with high-quality journalism. Join our small, hands-on team as we create the future of news.

About the Role

We are seeking a versatile Producer/Editor who thrives in a fast-paced, innovative environment and is excited to be at the forefront of our original content journey. You will play a pivotal role in developing original content projects with an end-to-end mindset—from initial concept to ensuring it reaches our audience. This position offers the unique opportunity to rethink how news is created, leveraging new tools, including AI, and working closely with our world-class engineering team to build solutions that scale to the entire country.

You will need a creative mindset, a relentless drive to get projects across the finish line, and a willingness to experiment with unconventional methods and technologies. If you’re ready to challenge the norms of traditional news production and think from a first-principles approach, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Content Production: Produce and edit engaging news content for Haystack News’ platform and beyond, including social media channels.

  • Innovative Storytelling: Leverage new tools and methods, including AI-powered solutions, to create content more efficiently and effectively.

  • End-to-End Project Ownership: Take projects from ideation to execution, ensuring timely delivery despite limited resources.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the engineering and design teams to conceptualize and develop tools to enhance production capabilities. This includes creating automated content templates, such as real estate reports and local crime alerts, that can be used across the country.

  • Adaptability: Experiment with and adopt emerging technologies and workflows to improve content creation.

  • Quality Assurance: Maintain the highest quality standards in both production and editing while meeting tight deadlines.

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Proven experience in producing and editing digital video content, particularly news or journalism-focused content, with expertise in at least one industry-standard video editing toolset (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro).

  • A passion for leveraging AI-powered solutions and experimenting with new tools (e.g., Capcut, Descript, RunwayML, etc.) to improve efficiency and redefine news video creation and distribution.

  • Ability to think creatively and execute projects with limited resources, while maintaining strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Experience working in a startup environment or with small teams, comfortable with shifting priorities and rapid changes.

Why Join Haystack News

  • Opportunity to influence the future of news and video journalism.

  • Be part of a mission-driven team at the forefront of innovation in news delivery.

  • Collaborative, supportive, and fast-paced startup culture.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
