Description

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced DevSecOps / Cloud Platform Engineer to design, automate, secure, and operate ATLAS, the VA’s open-architected, multi-cloud enterprise data management and analytics platform. This hands-on role will build reliable infrastructure and shared platform services across Azure and AWS, automate the delivery of data applications and pipelines, and strengthen interoperability among the enterprise platforms used to ingest, condition, curate, and publish multi-source data as consumable data products. You will partner with architects, data engineers, developers, security teams, and government stakeholders to standardize environments, improve CI/CD, observability, resilience, and governance, and ensure consistent, secure access to trusted data. Your work will enable data scientists, analysts, and product teams to deliver insights that support evidence-based decisions and improve outcomes for Veterans and their families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate secure, scalable platform environments across Azure and AWS for development, testing, and production workloads.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure as Code and configuration-management practices with tools such as Terraform, Bicep, CloudFormation, Ansible, or Packer.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines that integrate automated testing, security scanning, compliance checks, artifact management, and controlled deployments.
  • Administer containerized workloads and shared platform services using Docker, Kubernetes, and managed cloud orchestration services.
  • Support the reliable operation and deployment of Summit data services, including Azure Data Factory, Synapse Pipelines, Databricks, Starburst, and Azure Data Lake Service.
  • Enable secure integrations among databases, APIs, event streams, data pipelines, analytics services, and external enterprise systems.
  • Implement cloud security controls including identity and access management, secrets management, encryption, network segmentation, vulnerability remediation, patching, and Zero Trust principles.
  • Build observability and operational monitoring using cloud-native and enterprise logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and dashboard capabilities.
  • Lead incident troubleshooting and root-cause analysis; implement resiliency, backup, recovery, retry, and performance-optimization strategies.
  • Support metadata, governance, and data-quality capabilities using Collibra and enable downstream Azure ML/AI services and Pyramid Analytics/Power BI solutions.
  • Partner with architecture, cybersecurity, development, database, and data engineering teams to align platform services with application and data-product requirements.
  • Develop and maintain platform architecture documentation, operational runbooks, standards, and procedures.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and participate in Agile planning, design reviews, and stakeholder discussions.
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eight (8) or more years of experience in cloud engineering, DevOps, DevSecOps, platform engineering, systems engineering, or related enterprise roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience designing and operating cloud environments in Azure and AWS.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with integrated automated testing, security scanning, and deployment controls.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Bicep, CloudFormation, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience administering Linux environments, Docker containers, and Kubernetes-based platforms.
  • Strong understanding of cloud security, IAM, secrets management, encryption, networking, vulnerability management, compliance, and secure configuration practices.
  • Experience with logging, monitoring, and observability tools such as Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, CloudWatch, Splunk, ELK, Prometheus, or Grafana.
  • Experience supporting enterprise data platforms and services including Azure Data Factory, Synapse Pipelines, Databricks, Starburst, Azure Data Lake Service, and Collibra.
  • Familiarity with Azure ML/AI services and Pyramid Analytics/Power BI platform support.
  • Experience troubleshooting distributed systems, platform integrations, performance bottlenecks, and production incidents.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders and produce clear architecture and operational documentation.
  • Ability to lead technical efforts, work independently, and collaborate effectively in Agile delivery teams.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs, other federal agencies, healthcare systems, or regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with federal cloud security requirements, Zero Trust, FedRAMP-aligned architectures, and healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR.
  • Experience with event-driven platforms, Kafka or AWS MSK, real-time streaming, and resilient integration patterns.
  • Relevant cloud, Kubernetes, security, or DevOps certifications.
Benefits

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
