Job summary:

The IT Enterprise Architecture, Network, Cloud and Data Platform Group at HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan) is committed to delivering meaningful customer value in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Cloud Platform, the DevOps Engineer will support cloud infrastructure and operations with an emphasis on both cloud and traditional networking to enable solutions supporting HOOPP Investment, Finance and Risk Management groups. The DevOps Engineer will collaborate closely with Application Deliver teams, Enterprise Architects, the Project Management Office and Governance, Information Security, and Infrastructure Network Product Owners and business partners to ensure that cloud operations and initiatives are fully aligned with organizational objectives.

What you will do:

  • Utilize your in-depth knowledge and expertise in designing, deploying, and managing reliable cloud infrastructure solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS.

  • Interface with internal business partners to manage technical operations, triage and fix network or security operational issues.

  • Independently leads key initiatives that require interfacing with internal customers and stakeholders to gather requirements, design, plan and implement reliable and secure solutions that meet customer and stakeholder requirements.

  • Follow Infrastructure as Code practices, automate network infrastructure provisioning and security operational processes using Terraform and Azure DevOps.

  • Provide 2nd and 3rd level technical support and guidance to users and other DevOps Engineers related to AWS Network operations.

  • Work closely with IT and Development teams to answer technical questions or resolve issues within network and cloud operations domains.

  • Create and maintain documentation for cloud architectures, configurations, and processes.

  • Deliver and improve Security metrics

  • Conduct risk assessment checks on systems, firewalls, update security procedures and monitor all systems (AWS)

  • Perform incident response, vulnerability management, penetration testing, network security, etc. aligning HOOPP’s IT standards and policy.

  • Work with internal HOOPP architecture, infrastructure, security, risk and governance teams to ensure that all system and network security, governance, and business continuity requirements are met.

  • Collaborate with vendor and support the scheduling of upgrades and installing of emergency out-of-band critical patches.

  • Proactively monitor services for network and security systems with a goal of minimizing down time.

  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation for incident response and escalations.

  • Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of current technological trends and best practices for cloud site reliability engineering.

What you bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in IT Infrastructure Operations combined with 2+ years of experience with  networking in both cloud and on-prem environments. 

  • Strong networking knowledge (DHCP, DNS, VLANs, IPSEC VPN, etc.) as well as experience with internet routing protocols and concepts: TCP/IP, BGP, MPLS, ISIS and/or OSPF

  • Experience working with and configuring Palo Alto firewalls and Panorama, and security features such as URL filtering, proxies, SSL decryption, etc.

  • Well versed in AWS networking services such as Amazon VPC, load balancers, Internet Gateway, NAT Gateway, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect and security services such as AWS WAF and Shield

  • Experience with implementing observability and monitoring to quickly identify sub-optimal performance

  • Experience in Windows PowerShell, Python, Bash or other mainstream scripting languages

  • Strong troubleshooting abilities to resolve systems and network issues

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, including hands-on experience using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef).

  • Experience with or strong desire to learn containerization technologies such as Docker and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, AWS compute and storage services.

  • Strong knowledge of Agile practices such as Scrum or Kanban

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and creatively to develop resolutions while maintaining a security mindset.

  • Ability to work in a high-performing team culture, with an openness to constantly evolving and changing priorities, and new challenges.


The expected annual base salary range for this role is: $71,000 - $109,000 CAD
The actual base salary offered to the successful candidate may vary based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, individual's expertise and level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered.  
This role is eligible to participate in discretionary incentive plan(s), subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable incentive plan text.
