Position Overview

The DevOps Backstage Intern will support the development and operation of an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) built on Backstage, with a focus on improving the developer experience and enabling reliable application delivery on Kubernetes. In this role, the intern will gain hands‑on exposure to platform engineering concepts by assisting with service catalogs, templates (“golden paths”), CI/CD integrations, and Kubernetes‑based infrastructure. Working closely with experienced platform engineers, the intern will help maintain platform components, support developer workflows, and contribute documentation and small improvements that make it easier for internal teams to build, deploy, and operate their services.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in supporting an Internal Developer Platform built on Backstage by helping maintain platform components that enable teams to discover, deploy, and operate their services on Kubernetes.
  • Learn how Backstage entities (components, APIs, resources, systems) are defined and maintained, and help update service metadata, ownership information, and documentation.
  • Support the use of Backstage templates (golden paths) by helping test scaffolding workflows, validating generated Kubernetes manifests, and ensuring deployments follow platform standards.
  • Help monitor and troubleshoot platform‑related Kubernetes workloads by reviewing logs, pod status, and basic metrics, escalating issues to senior platform engineers as needed.
  • Contribute to improving the developer experience by documenting Backstage features, onboarding steps, and common issues, and helping keep service dashboards and links up to date.

Nice to Haves:

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes concepts (Pods, Deployments, Services) through coursework, labs, or personal projects—even at a basic level.
  • Basic experience with Git and GitHub (or similar) for cloning repos, creating pull requests, and following code review feedback.
  • Some hands‑on experience with containers and Docker, including building or running containerized applications.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills, with an interest in improving developer experience and platform usability.
  • Pursuing a Degree in Computer Sciences

Requirements:

  • Must be actively enrolled in a college degree program
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

We value diversity at our company. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or any other applicable legally protected characteristics in the location in which the candidate is applying.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
