The Commercial Solar Estimator develops complete and accurate project cost estimates for commercial and distributed-generation solar (+ BESS) projects. This role bridges early-stage development and construction, translating conceptual opportunities into firm proposals and fully engineered, shovel-ready projects.

The Commercial Solar Estimator leads the coordination of technical scope, design validation, and cost modeling to the construction delivery team for execution.

Target Salary: $85,000 - $115,000 depending on experience

Commercial Solar Estimator Responsibilities:

Project Development & Scope Definition

  • Transform conceptual design inputs from the Development Team into detailed scopes of work and preliminary designs.
  • Coordinate site data collection, interconnection review, and constructability assessments.
  • Collaborate with engineering to validate design concepts, ensure code compliance, and produce CD30 → CD90 deliverables.
  • Identify value-engineering opportunities and cost-performance trade-offs.

Estimating & Cost Analysis

  • Develop detailed cost estimates, bills of materials, and measurement takeoffs for solar PV and BESS projects.
  • Gather and analyze subcontractor and vendor quotes; maintain a current cost database for materials and labor.
  • Evaluate regional labor rules, union and prevailing-wage requirements, logistics, and supply-chain risk.

Technical Coordination & Documentation

  • Work with engineering and CAD teams to generate or review design drawings.
  • Ensure alignment between design intent, code requirements, and cost estimates.
  • Prepare firm proposal packages, including technical narratives, drawings, and cost summaries for client presentation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Sales, Product Management, and Operations to align estimating strategy with customer and market needs.
  • Communicate clearly with internal stakeholders to ensure project assumptions are transparent and executable.
  • Provide technical support during customer meetings and proposal reviews.

Project Transition

  • Deliver complete CD90–CD100 handoff packages to the construction team, including design sets, scope narratives, pricing documentation, and procurement recommendations.
  • Support construction kickoff as a subject-matter expert to ensure a smooth project handoffs.

Commercial Solar Estimator Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • 4-8 years’ experience in each of the below:
    • Estimating renewable energy projects, specifically relevant to electrical and cost estimation
    • Specialty contractor (MEP) experience, while this role is mostly focused on retrofits of existing properties, new construction/general contractor experience is preferred.
    • Certified Energy Manager, NABCEP, LEED AP . (Candidate is not expected to have all)
    • OSHA 10 Hour or higher a plus

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

This position operates in both office and field settings. Travel may be required for site walks, vendor visits, or project meetings. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, phone, and keyboard. May regularly need to lift up to 20 lbs., unassisted.
