To connect the world, we must reflect the world. At Virgin Hyperloop, we’re bringing together unique perspectives, empowering our community to celebrate all voices, and creating equal opportunities to build, grow, and thrive.
WHY WE NEED YOU
EM Engines team is responsible for the design and delivery of the electromagnetic engines that propel, lift and guide the hyperloop pod down the track. We are an interdisciplinary team and are looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer to manage a small team of mechanical engineers and to lead the development of one or more of these engines. This role is based in Los Angeles, with occasional travel to our Las Vegas build/test facility.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- You will manage a small team of 2-3 Mechanical Design Engineers, serving as a subject matter expert who can review designs and provide mentorship to other engineers.
- This is a technical manager role so most of your time will be dedicated to leading the mechanical design of the one or more electromagnetic engines from low volume prototyping through production.
- Develop team guidelines, processes and best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality engineering design in all products; leverage industry best practices
- You will collaborate daily with an interdisciplinary team of Electrical, Thermal, Structural and Manufacturing engineers and analysts
- Create and maintain CAD models of complex sub-assemblies
- Analyze and verify the design through hand calculations and/or FEA
- Iterate design based on analysis, prototyping and testing learnings; provide feedback to drive system level architecture trades
- Work with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely build and delivery of functional hardware
WHAT YOU'VE DONE
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field
- Experience leading the mechanical design of complex sub-assemblies from concept through release, build, test and to product
- Hands-on knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods; experience designing and delivering components from a variety of manufacturing methods
- Performed tolerance stack analysis to ensure proper fit and function of an assembly
- Proficient level skill in at least one CAD package, strong working knowledge of GD&T
- Knowledge of attachments and joints and mechanics of materials
- Experience meeting challenging deadlines while handling multiple responsibilities
NICE TO HAVE
- Deep experience in GD&T
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (common constraints and load types and their behavior, a strong sense for good approximations of physical situations, basic meshing)
- Experience managing junior engineers
- Design of electric motors
