About Rundoo ℹ️

Our mission is to empower independent supply stores with best-in-class technology. Think of your local hardware store or mom-and-pop nursery—these are our clients. From paint to lumber to flooring, over 200,000 such stores across the country sell over $1T of building materials annually using outdated, on-premises systems. We’re aiming to help them modernize so that they can continue to thrive.

Backed by leading investors including Bessemer and CRV, we've raised $18M across three rounds and are growing quickly. Our team is made up of builders, sellers, and industry veterans with a shared goal: to bring modern technology to an overlooked industry.

About the role 💼

As our first dedicated Design Systems Designer, you will own the foundation that every product experience is built on. Sitting at the intersection of design craft and technical implementation, you’ll audit and evolve what exists today into a cohesive, scalable system that designers and engineers actually love using. The ideal person for this role is both a systems thinker and a hands-on builder: someone who gets energized by bringing order to complexity, cares deeply about consistency and craft, and knows how to bring engineers along for the ride.

What you’ll do as a Design Systems Designer at Rundoo 🗒️
  • Own & evolve Rundoo’s design system: audit what exists today to define patterns, components, and guidelines that clean up what we have and will scale with us.

  • Re-build & maintain our Figma web & mobile component libraries: simplify and augment our component libraries.

  • Evangelize the system and advocate for consistency: partner with engineers to translate components into production-ready, easy-to-use code and champion adoption.

  • Align the design system roadmap with product priorities: collaborate with product, design, & engineering to ensure design system work enables our product roadmap.

  • Design features that fall outside the system: when engineers struggle to use the system, jump in as a product designer to inform system extension or to guide them in how to best use what already exists.

Requirements ☑️
  • Based in the SF Bay Area with flexibility to work in our Redwood City office ~4 days per week.

  • 3-5+ years of product design experience, with meaningful time spent working on or contributing to a design system.

  • Figma proficiency, including auto layout, component variants, design tokens, etc.

  • Solid understanding of how design systems bridge to frontend implementation via CSS and component-based frameworks like React.

  • Well-versed in web and mobile best practices and how they differ across platforms.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment where process & priorities shift frequently.

Bonus points 🌟
  • Technical skills, including knowledge of how to write frontend code and comfort building simple components that implement your designs.

  • Early-stage startup experience ideally building a design system from scratch.

  • B2B SaaS experience with dense, data-heavy UI patterns.

Compensation 💵
  • Base Salary: $156k-$176k

  • Equity: 0.0328%-0.0364%

About the team 👥

Here is the current makeup of our design team:

  1. Andrew (Co-Founder & CTO): studied computer science & humanities at Stanford; worked as a software engineer and head of engineering at Apple & Anova; danced with the SF ballet (where he met his wife)! 🩰

  2. Zach (Product Designer): Product design at Stanford; worked at several startups before joining Rundoo; award-winning Tahitian dancer 🌴

Interview Process 🎤
  1. Intro Call (20 mins) — Align on role requirements and ask some basic design questions.

  2. Take Home Overview & Portfolio Review (30 min) — Andrew to cover the take home ask and answer questions. You walk through your portfolio/past work and answer questions.

  3. Paid Take Home (~5 hours) — This is the core of the interview. We’ll share a copy of our current design system in Figma and ask you to 1) identify its biggest gaps and 2) execute on filling at least one of them. This interview will be paid, and we ask that you dedicate significant time to it.

  4. Onsite (4 hours, in-person)

    1. Take home review: A few members of the team asking questions about your take-home live.

    2. Culture: Behavioral questions, geared toward our culture & values.

    3. Lunch with the team

    4. Engineering collaboration: 1:1 with Andrew

    5. Design collaboration: 1:1 with Zach

  5. References: One manager and one peer.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
