Description

The primary function of the Dermatology Physician Assistant (PA) is to provide specialized dermatologic care under the supervision of a licensed physician. The Dermatology PA is responsible for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of skin, hair, and nail conditions in accordance with established clinical protocols, standardized procedures, and scope of practice guidelines. As part of the onboarding process, the candidate's cognitive and physical abilities will be assessed by the Supervising Physician to ensure the capability to meet the demands of the role effectively. The Dermatology PA will report to the Supervising Physician and will deliver high-quality dermatologic care in a community health setting, with a focus on both medical and minor procedural dermatology. The following statements for this position reflect only some specific responsibilities and are considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all duties required that may be inherent in the position:

  • Perform comprehensive dermatologic evaluations, including detailed skin examinations, lesion identification, and risk assessments.
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic dermatologic conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, infections, and other skin disorders.
  • Perform dermatologic procedures within scope, including but not limited to biopsies, cryotherapy, incision and drainage, excisions of benign lesions, and other minor in-office procedures.
  • Identify and evaluate suspicious lesions and initiate appropriate treatment plans or referrals for skin cancer management.
  • Prescribe and manage dermatologic medications, including topical, oral, and injectable therapies, in accordance with protocols and DEA authorization.
  • Educate patients on skin health, disease prevention, treatment plans, wound care, and post-procedure instructions.
  • Accurately document all patient encounters, procedures, treatment plans, and follow-up care in the electronic health record in a timely and compliant manner.
  • Monitor patient progress and response to treatment, adjusting care plans as appropriate within established guidelines.
  • Collaborate with supervising physicians and interdisciplinary care teams to coordinate care, particularly for complex or high-risk dermatologic conditions.
  • Recognize conditions requiring escalation and appropriately refer patients to dermatologists, specialists, or higher levels of care.
  • Maintain infection control standards, sterilization protocols, and OSHA compliance specific to dermatologic procedures.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer reviews, and clinical audits related to dermatology services.
  • Attend clinician meetings, departmental meetings, and training sessions as required.
  • Comply with all safety, emergency, hazard, OSHA, sterilization, clinical, quality assurance, and administrative protocols, guidelines, and standards.
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations and other relevant laws to protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all communications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the executive leadership and administration.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Physician Assistant issued by the California Board of Physician Assistant. 
  • Current and active DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) License.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in dermatology or a combination of dermatology and primary care with significant exposure to dermatologic conditions.
  • Demonstrated competency in performing dermatologic procedures (e.g., biopsies, cryotherapy, lesion removal).
  • Knowledge of skin cancer screening, diagnosis, and management practices preferred.
  • Experience working in an ambulatory care or community health clinic setting is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), preferably eClinicalWorks (eCW).
  • Strong clinical judgment, procedural skills, and ability to work collaboratively in a team-based care environment.

  • Spanish speaking required.
