This is an amazing opportunity to get involved! As a Database Administrator, you will play a crucial role. We’re seeking a hands-on Database Administrator to own the reliability, performance, security, and lifecycle of our on-premises Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL platforms. You’ll engineer HA/DR, tune mission-critical workloads, automate routine work, and partner with development and analytics teams. If you thrive in solving complex data challenges and love being the go-to expert for mission-critical systems, this role is for you!

Our goal is to have a sophisticated team equipped with expert technical skills in addition to keen business acumen. Each member of our team adds unique value to the business and the customer. Sourceability is committed to a culture where we attract the best talent in the industry.

Insight on your impact:

SQL Server Administration (2016+ on-prem)

  • Administer SQL Server (installation, upgrades, service packs/cumulative updates) and harden instances.
  • Perform routine maintenance: index rebuild/reorg, statistics updates, DBCC CHECKDB and other consistency checks.
  • Monitor SQL Server error logs and Windows Event Logs; triage and remediate issues.
  • Manage security: logins/users, roles & permissions, authentication methods, and auditing.
  • Implement encryption for data at rest, in transit, and in backups (e.g., TDE/Always Encrypted, TLS).
  • Plan capacity and storage; manage disk/volume layout; optimize database objects and filegroups (TempDB, log, data).
  • Utilize SQL Server tooling: Extended Events, Query Store; when appropriate, SQL Profiler and Database Engine Tuning Advisor (DTA).

PostgreSQL Administration (on-prem)

  • Install, configure, upgrade, and harden PostgreSQL (12+).
  • Own autovacuum/VACUUM/ANALYZE strategy; manage statistics, partitioning, and routine maintenance.
  • Performance analysis using pg_stat_statements, EXPLAIN/ANALYZE; index and query tuning.
  • Security: roles/privileges, SSL/TLS, auditing; encryption via pgcrypto/OS/disk as appropriate.

Backups, Recovery, and DR

  • Establish standards and schedules for database backups (full/diff/log for SQL; pgBackRest/PITR for Postgres).
  • Develop, document, and test recovery procedures to meet defined RPO/RTO.
  • Create and test Disaster Recovery plans and run periodic drills with clear runbooks.

High Availability & Resilience

  • Implement and support SQL Server HA options such as Always On Availability Groups, WSFC Failover Clustering, Log Shipping, and (where applicable) Mirroring.
  • Implement and support PostgreSQL HA: streaming/logical replication; Patroni/Pacemaker; PgBouncer/pgpool.
  • Maintain Windows Failover Clusters supporting SQL workloads; validate quorum/witness and failover paths.

Performance Engineering

  • End-to-end tuning: indexing, stats, parameter sniffing, execution plans, TempDB/log optimization, memory/I/O contention.
  • Postgres: autovacuum tuning, bloat management, partitioning, statement sampling.
  • Partner with developers to optimize schema, queries, and ORM usage; champion SQL best practices and code reviews.

Automation, Monitoring, and Ops

  • Automate admin tasks with PowerShell, T-SQL, PL/pgSQL, and (optionally) Bash/Python; version changes with Git/CI.
  • Implement monitoring/alerting (SQL Sentry/Redgate, Azure Data Studio extensions, pgbadger/pgwatch2, Prometheus/Grafana, SCOM/Zabbix/Nagios).
  • Build and maintain Windows Servers, configure server roles, and manage endpoint protection.

Collaboration & Process

  • Review DB changes, contribute to architecture reviews, maintain documentation, and participate in the on-call rotation.
  • Partner with Security/Compliance to support audits (e.g., ISO 27001) with policies and evidence.

Your qualifications, your influence:

To be successful in the role, you must possess the following skills

  • 5+ years as a DBA (or 3+ for mid-level with strong performance/HA).
  • Deep expertise operating on-prem SQL Server and solid, production PostgreSQL experience.
  • Strong T-SQL and PL/pgSQL; PowerShell for admin and cluster tasks; familiarity with WSFC.
  • Proven HA/DR design and execution meeting stated RPO/RTO.
  • Practical security hardening, encryption, auditing, and patch management.
  • Solid OS/virtualization foundations (Windows/Linux; VMware vSphere/vSAN preferred).

Work Conditions

  • On-prem maintenance windows and participation in an on-call rotation; occasional off-hours work.

Preferred skills and technical familiarity:

Adding additional insight, and a growth mindset, will elevate your contribution in this role

  • Cloud DB services (Azure SQL/Managed Instance, AWS RDS/Aurora for Postgres).
  • Tooling: SSMS, Azure Data Studio, pgAdmin, Redgate suite, SQL Sentry, pgBackRest, PgBouncer/pgpool.
  • ETL/ELT and CDC (SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Airbyte/Fivetran).
  • Networking/storage fundamentals (DNS, VLANs, SAN/NAS, throughput/latency).
  • Certifications: Microsoft DP-300; PostgreSQL/EDB; Azure/AWS.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
