Job Summary

We’re looking for a Director of Data Science to build and lead our data organization. You’ll play a critical role in shaping how Courtyard uses data to make business decisions, optimize our marketing strategy, ensure quality product and financial metrics, and deliver the best experience for our collectors and sellers. This is a hands-on leadership role. You’ll set the vision, understanding the data needs of the entire company, and get into the details, writing SQL and Python code, building predictive models, and guiding the team on experimentation and analytics.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a growing team of data scientists and analysts, fostering a culture of curiosity, rigor, and impact.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Operations, Growth, and Finance leadership to identify opportunities to leverage data for better decisions and experiences.
  • Own our data stack and analytics workflows, ensuring we have the right pipelines, tooling, and governance in place.
  • Build predictive and optimization models for inventory forecasting, user behavior, and marketplace dynamics.
  • Design and oversee experimentation frameworks, from A/B testing to cohort analyses.
  • Drive reporting and data visualization, enabling teams to self-serve insights via dashboards and metrics.
  • Contribute hands-on in SQL and Python — this role requires someone who can still write and review code regularly.

What You’ll Bring

  • 10+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or data engineering, with at least 2 years managing a team and interacting with cross-functional leadership.
  • Deep technical proficiency in SQL and Python (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn).
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, ETL, and statistical analysis.
  • Proven track record at an e-commerce, consumer tech, or B2C brand, ideally one that’s scaled fast.
  • Experience using data to drive customer acquisition, retention, and monetization strategies.
  • Excellent communicator — able to translate complex data concepts into actionable insights for non-technical teams.
  • Excited by the idea of building from scratch, moving fast, and having a direct impact on business growth.

What You’ll Get In Return

  • A dynamic and engaging environment focused on fostering real growth and innovation
  • Opportunities to create amazing products that our customers truly love and value
  • Comprehensive health insurance packages with dependent coverage
  • Competitive salary with ample opportunities for career advancement and development
  • Enjoy the flexibility of a fully remote work environment
  • 401(k) plan with a 4% employer match to help you plan for the future
  • $100 monthly dogfooding stipend to support trying out our products firsthand
  • Access to employee wellness programs designed to support your overall well-being

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
