Description

ScyllaDB is the recognized leader in high-performance, low-latency NoSQL databases. Our flagship product, ScyllaDB, is a drop-in replacement for Apache Cassandra and DynamoDB that delivers dramatically higher performance and lower node-to-node latency. ScyllaDB is built for applications that require extreme speed at massive scale, empowering industry leaders like Disney, Tesla, Whoop, Mavenir, and Discord to build breakthrough experiences without compromising on performance. We are a company of engineers, for engineers, passionate about pushing the boundaries of database technology.

As a startup, we thrive on adaptability, improvisation, and overcoming challenges together. This means we collectively figure out what's best in the moment and for the future, and then we execute. Our Customer Engineering team is at the heart of this mission, ensuring our enterprise customers achieve extreme success with our technology.

The Position

ScyllaDB is seeking a highly technical and customer-focused Customer Engineer to join our global team. This is a dynamic, post-sale role where you will be the primary technical point of contact for our customers, diving deep into their unique challenges to ensure the stability, performance, and success of their ScyllaDB deployments. From high-priority migrations and complex performance tuning to managing unexpected surprises, you will leverage your deep technical expertise to guide customers through their entire journey. We are looking for a pragmatic problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is energized by the variety and technical depth this role offers.

Key Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Customer Deployment Management: Serve as the dedicated technical expert through the entire customer lifecycle. This includes planning and executing high-priority migrations, conducting in-depth application and performance reviews (analyzing latencies, driver settings, CQL code, and data modeling), and performing periodic cluster health checks to ensure optimal operation and proactively address needs like scaling or feature adoption.
  • Technical Troubleshooting and SME Support: Act as the go-to Subject Matter Expert (SME) for customer questions on ScyllaDB Cloud, features, drivers, and operations. You will troubleshoot and resolve complex, unexpected issues—investigating everything from right-sizing challenges post-sale to operational surprises—providing timely and effective solutions to ensure customer satisfaction and system stability.
  • Strategic Collaboration and Enablement: Collaborate cross-functionally to drive customer success. This includes supporting Customer Success Managers, Sales and Account Executives with pre-sales qualification and post-sale technical updates, contributing to the internal knowledge base with best practices and documentation, and occasionally supporting corporate initiatives like Scylla University, conferences, and technical blogs.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar customer-facing, hands-on technical role (e.g., Customer Engineer, Solutions Architect, Professional Services Engineer).
  • Proven experience supporting enterprise customers in a post-sale technical capacity.
  • Hands-on experience designing, configuring, and troubleshooting high-availability distributed databases, specifically with Cassandra, ScyllaDB, or Datastax Enterprise.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Linux environments and scripting in Python or a compiled language like Java, C, or C++.
  • Solid understanding of IP networking and hands-on experience with major Cloud Providers (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure).
  • A pragmatic, problem-solving mindset, comfortable with ambiguity and capable of multitasking effectively during high-pressure situations.
  • Strong autonomous, self-motivated work ethic with excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technology field such as Computer Science or Engineering.

A Big Plus If You Have

  • Deep operational knowledge of database concepts: data modeling, compaction, replication strategies, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with other NoSQL databases (e.g., DynamoDB, Redis, MongoDB).
  • Public Cloud Certifications (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Experience with Docker, git repositories, and knowledge of Kubernetes (K8s).

What We Offer

This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of database technology with some of the most demanding and innovative enterprises in the world. You will have a direct impact on their success while deepening your expertise in high-performance systems. We offer a collaborative, challenging, and truly agile startup environment where your technical skills, customer empathy, and ability to adapt will be highly valued and critical to our collective success.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
