Job Description

The Creative Director, Art, collaborates with internal teams and clients to develop, strategize, and execute cutting-edge pharmaceutical marketing initiatives that drive brand success. This role requires a deep understanding of client challenges, industry trends, and regulatory requirements, ensuring creative solutions are both innovative and compliant. The Creative Director leads the strategic direction of campaigns, guiding the conceptualization and design processes, while also playing a key role in business development. By assembling and mentoring cross-functional teams, this individual ensures the delivery of compelling, results-oriented visual storytelling that engages target audiences across multiple platforms. Additionally, the Creative Director fosters strong client relationships, translating complex scientific information into creative concepts that resonate with healthcare professional and patient audiences.

Job Duties

Creative and Analytical Responsibilities

  • Partner with internal core team members to develop and drive the strategic direction of client deliverables and new business initiatives
  • Engage with client teams to understand their brand, key messages, and strategic objectives and to communicate a creative vision
  • Understand therapeutic areas and target audiences of assigned products
  • Translate complex scientific and medical information into compelling, results-driven creative concepts and campaigns that resonate with healthcare professional and patient audiences
  • Conceptualize and brainstorm innovative brand experiences
  • Ensure your own creative work, and that of the team, is on brief every time; be a strong “player-coach,” taking on some of the hands-on project work while managing the work of others on the creative team
  • Leverage data insights and metrics to continually optimize creative work
  • Contract with and provide creative direction and oversight to external partners and freelance Creative personnel as needed
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to establish project scopes and budgets
  • Ensure adherence of assigned project teams to project timelines, scopes, and budgets
  • Review all materials associated with a project and provide feedback as needed regarding design, adherence to project specifications, audience appropriateness, and consistency with established creative strategy
  • Provide project sign-off, ensuring adherence with creative direction and QA process
  • Present work, provide design rationale, and participate collaboratively in creative reviews or meetings with internal teams
  • Present creative ideas and deliverables to clients and relay feedback to teams, taking care to interpret and communicate feedback in a way that results in meaningful revisions as applicable
  • Participate in new business pitches, representing the vision for creative
  • Mentor and develop creative staff, providing guidance and fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration
  • Recognize and identify staffing needs, develop strong relationships with freelancers and recruiters to manage both short- and long-term resourcing needs
  • Keep current with news and trends in advertising, branding, design, media, and emerging technologies
  • Ensure adherence to all internal and client processes
  • Ensure creative materials adhere to pharmaceutical advertising regulatory guidelines, including FDA and OPDP requirements, and work closely with medical review teams

Leadership/Management Responsibilities

  • Assist senior leadership with the design and implementation of corporate strategies
    and cross-selling initiatives
  • Monitor and manage assigned creative activities to ensure timely delivery of products and services, on strategy and within budget
  • Lead, develop, and provide project-specific oversight to assigned internal Creative team members
  • Foster and develop collaboration among departments, internal groups, and individuals to ensure innovative and collaborative solutions to client needs
  • Ensure team compliance with product style guidelines, client contracts, timelines, and budgets

  • Strong creative design, conceptual, and visual story-telling skills
  • In-depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, other design software like Figma and Sketch, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of, or hands-on experience with, interactive programming
  • Excellent analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
  • Effective attention to detail and high degree of accuracy
  • Strong time management and project management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and multitask
  • Ability to work independently; self-motivated

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 10 years’ creative art/design experience with progressively increasing responsibilities at a pharmaceutical advertising agency
  • Proven history of leading creative campaigns and activities as advertising agency of record

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Familiarity with video, motion graphics, and with marketing tactics across print and digital channels

Working Conditions

  • Primarily remote position
  • Occasional travel to attend live client or internal team meetings
  • Ability to commit to extra and/or nontraditional hours as client needs require
