The Counsel, GM Energy position will be a key legal and strategic partner to GM's rapidly growing GM Energy business, supporting a portfolio of home, commercial, and fleet energy products and services, including EV charging, stationary storage, energy management software, and grid services. The role will require an ability to enable business objectives through innovative legal advice for complex matters relating to a variety of operational growth, retail, transactional, and risk management matters.

This is an individual contributor role for an experienced commercial attorney who is comfortable operating autonomously on cutting-edge issues, leading large cross-functional initiatives, and serving as a recognized subject matter expert across GM Energy and the broader enterprise.
The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-moving, growth-stage or start-up-like environment within a large enterprise-comfortable building structure where needed, operating with ambiguity, and scaling legal frameworks alongside a rapidly evolving business.

Key Responsibilities:
Strategic partnership and business planning
- Participate directly in strategy development and business planning for GM Energy, including new product launches, go-to-market strategies, and emerging business models (e.g., home energy ecosystems, grid services, public charging initiatives).
- Translate enterprise and business-unit strategies into practical legal frameworks and negotiation strategies that enable speed to market while appropriately managing risk.
- Proactively identify regulatory, commercial, and operational risks and opportunities relevant to GM Energy, and recommend pragmatic paths forward.
Commercial transactions and deal leadership
- Draft, interpret, and negotiate a wide range of complex commercial agreements, including:
- Collaboration and strategic alliance agreements
- Supply, distribution, and reseller agreements
- EV charging, energy services, and grid/utility-facing arrangements
- Commercial arrangements supporting GM Energy products and services
- Structure and lead end-to-end deal processes (from issue spotting and risk assessment through negotiation, escalation, approvals, and implementation), exercising independent judgment in a complex, fast-paced environment.
- Develop and maintain template agreements, playbooks, and fallback positions tailored for GM Energy's products, channels, and partners; continuously refine them based on business and regulatory developments.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Product, Software & Services,
- Sales & Marketing, Corporate Development, Finance, Operations, IT, and Compliance to integrate legal requirements into day-to-day operations, customer journeys, and internal processes.
- Review and advise on marketing, advertising, and customer-facing communications and journeys (including web content, campaigns, sales enablement, and training materials) to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulatory guidance, GM policies, and brand standards, and to embed efficient review and approval workflows.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.
- Admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience with a primary focus on complex commercial, technology, or M&A transactions, ideally in the energy or technology sectors.
- Demonstrated experience structuring and negotiating complex strategic relationships (e.g., collaborations, co-development or co-marketing arrangements, enterprise technology or platform deals).
- Proven ability to operate as an expert-level individual contributor:
- Independently manage a high-volume, high-complexity portfolio of matters with limited supervision.
- Apply strong business acumen and problem-solving skills to issues that materially impact business and functional objectives.
- Lead projects that require coordination across multiple teams and functions.
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to:
- Clearly and concisely explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
- Prepare and present recommendations and risk assessments to senior leadership.
- Navigate disagreements and competing priorities with facts, candor, and professional judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust and strong working relationships across diverse stakeholders (in-house legal colleagues, outside counsel, marketing, product, commercial, finance, and operations).
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with one or more of the following:
- Energy, utilities, or grid services (e.g., distributed energy resources, demand response, VPPs).
- EV charging infrastructure, e-mobility, or automotive/transportation.
- High-tech, software, data, or platform-based businesses.
- Experience supporting boards of directors or possessing strong financial expertise is a plus.

- The salary range for this role is $140,000 - $185,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
