CBC News is expanding its coverage of the United States with the addition of a new bureau in Los Angeles, California and we’re looking for a correspondent to lead our daily journalism from the west coast of the U.S.

At a time when the world, and Canada’s place within it, is rapidly changing, being present on the ground and reporting first-hand on the stories Canadians want and need to know about is critical. Los Angeles is more than home to the largest global entertainment industry. It’s a technological powerhouse at the forefront of climate change initiatives, and a gateway to the Pacific Rim. As the CBC News Correspondent based in L.A., you’ll be breaking-down complex issues to provide clarity to Canadian audiences.

In this position, you will work closely with the editorial teams in our Washington D.C. and New York City bureaus, including the Senior Producer of World News assignment, based in D.C. You will regularly collaborate with other journalists across CBC and Radio-Canada.  As CBC is Canada’s host broadcaster for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, you’ll also be collaborating with CBC Sports on games-related news coverage as well.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional journalist, with a broad range of social media, video, audio and text storytelling skills aimed at mobile and streaming audiences. You bring a deep knowledge of the United States - its history, its politics, its economics, its diplomacy and environment.

You thrive in a demanding daily news environment meeting multiple deadlines. You understand how stories work across platforms and on any given day you could be filing to one or more platforms including social and digital, video and audio.  You are adept at delivering live analysis and context, often on short notice, just as easily as you’re able to deliver social-first video and packaged reports. All of your journalism adheres to the CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

The minimum assignment length for this position is two years and, if agreed to by both parties, may be extended for up to an additional two years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate and execute compelling journalism that explores a variety of voices and perspectives, from daily news to short- and long-form features.

  • Go live on any platform whenever a story requires it.

  • Produce original content while also responding to breaking news and emerging stories in a fast-paced environment.

  • Pitch and cover stories that resonate with our national audience, with an ability to find the significance in world events for a Canadian audience.

  • Research and analyze complex issues using specialized sources to ensure our audience gets a deep, nuanced understanding of important topics.

  • Quickly identify significant issues and respond strategically to ensure they are covered accurately and effectively.

  • Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts with a wide range of sources.

What is required:

  • You are a journalist with a minimum of 8 years of comparable experience, including significant reporting experience at a network/national level.

  • Your extensive experience demonstrates that you can pivot quickly when a story changes, you remain respectful to colleagues when there are competing deadlines and content demands, and be open to social-centric presenting / hosting.

  • Exceptional storytelling skills, with a proven ability to produce memorable social, written, audio and visual content

  • Exceptional critical thinking skills, with an ability to breakdown complex issues and explain them clearly to audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to produce compelling social video content.

  • Strong on-air presence and skill with live reporting.

  • Extensive knowledge of world news and current affairs issues

  • A collaborative team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and willingness to work long and flexible hours, including overtime, evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills combined with a successful track record of working as part of a small team

  • Strong grasp of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices, with an ability to understand how they apply in your daily storytelling.

  • A university degree in journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
