Summary:

The Southern California News Group (SCNG), a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is looking for a talented Copy Editor to join our team. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with a highly experienced team to copy edit daily and weekly print editions, as well as premium magazines for SCNG, the Bay Area News Group, and the San Diego Union-Tribune — reaching a large and diverse audience across California.

This is a fully remote position but you must live in one of the following Southern California counties: Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside or San Diego.

What you will do:

  • Planning & Execution: Participate in news planning and efficiently manage page flow under tight deadlines, including proofing and clearing pages for print

  • Content Creation: Develop engaging supplementary content such as refers, explainers, pull quotes, and captions to support design

  • Collaboration & Communication: Liaise with assignment editors and reporters, with potential for independent news gathering and fact-checking

  • Editing & Adaptation: Review and edit content for accuracy and space constraints, working closely with editorial colleagues

  • Workflow Management: Facilitate page flow across multiple publications with staggered deadlines, prioritizing effectively

  • Quality Assurance: Review designed pages meticulously to ensure accuracy and adherence to standards before print release

  • Problem Solving & Creativity: Develop innovative solutions to design and space challenges, enhancing the overall presentation

  • Research & Verification: Gather and verify information through documents, online resources, and investigative efforts

  • Strategic Awareness: Recognize and communicate the interplay between text, visuals, and design in achieving the newspaper's objectives

What you will bring:

  • Experience with newspaper copy editing and familiarity with AP style

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite preferred

  • Ability to work quickly and make good decisions on deadline

  • Familiarity with Southern California current events and history

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a remote team environment; strong communication skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or a degree in journalism, communication or related field is preferred

  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends

Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly wage is $24.04. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
