WHO WE ARE

Vox candidly shepherds audiences through politics and policy, business and pop culture, food, science, and everything else that matters.

Vox is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

The Vox style and standards team is the last line of defense before our work goes out to our audience. We’re dedicated to ensuring all of our work meets the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, and fairness.

The copy editor will be responsible for copy editing and fact-checking Vox content (text, videos, graphics, social copy, and other materials as needed) to ensure it meets our high editorial standards of clarity, accuracy, inclusivity, and sensitivity, as well as being free of typos and grammatical errors and adhering to Vox style. This editor will also weigh in on critical decisions about our content to ensure the work we publish reflects our goals of quality and ambition. They will work across the network to ensure that our work finds a wide audience through engagement strategy, strong headlines, and homepage placement.

We expect them to have at least four years of copy editing experience, preferably at a digital-first news organization. This is a full-time role that can be remote.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Copy edit Vox content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, house style, and editorial standards of clarity, sensitivity, and fairness.
  • Thoroughly fact-check certain stories, assessing all claims, data, quotes, statistics, and sources to ensure they are correct and supported by reliable evidence.
  • Use discretion and independent judgment to determine whether articles meet our standard for publication and flag potential issues to senior team members.
  • Read, evaluate, and edit all unpublished works using the following criteria:
    • Clarity and accuracy
    • Adherence to best practices with regard to sensitivity and inclusivity, legal liability, and inflammatory language
    • Proper Vox style, spelling, and grammar
  • Assist senior team members in setting publishing standards:
    • Identify stylistic issues or inconsistencies and discuss with the team to determine a solution
    • Assist with fact-checking, crafting display copy, image choice, and other duties
    • Learn Vox style inside and out and serve as an expert adviser for staff, including answering questions in the Style and Standards channel

WHO YOU ARE

  • 4+ years’ experience in copy editing, preferably for a digital-first news organization
  • Experience in fact-checking news stories
  • An eagle eye for mistakes in grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • A commitment to the highest journalistic standards of accuracy, clarity, and sensitivity/inclusivity
  • The ability to work quickly and collaboratively under tight deadlines amid a busy news environment
  • Familiarity with AP style a plus

If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
