Position Overview
A large, vertically integrated farming company is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting operations and financial reporting functions. This role is deeply embedded in the agricultural side of the business, partnering closely with farm operations, production, and executive leadership to ensure accurate cost tracking, operational efficiency, and strategic financial insight.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in accounting within agriculture, farming, or a related industry, along with a hands-on leadership style and a solid understanding of operational cost drivers in a farming environment.
Key Responsibilities of the Controller- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, cost accounting, inventory, and financial reporting
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Develop and maintain cost accounting systems specific to farming operations (crop costing, yield analysis, labor, and equipment utilization)
- Partner with farm managers and operations teams to analyze variances, margins, and productivity metrics
- Prepare internal financial reports and dashboards to support operational decision-making
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and relevant agricultural accounting practices
- Manage audits and coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors
- Strengthen internal controls and accounting policies across multiple farming locations
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a high-performance team environment
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Experience in agriculture, farming, food production, or a related industry strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of cost accounting and inventory management in an operational setting
- Proven ability to partner with non-finance teams and translate financial data into actionable insights
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP systems
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities
