Position Overview

The Controller will lead the company’s accounting operations and play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial reporting. This individual will own the month-end close process, oversee the general ledger, manage tax and compliance requirements, and partner closely with leadership on financial insights. As Charted is built on the NetSuite platform, the Controller must be highly experienced in NetSuite ERP—capable of managing configurations, optimizing workflows, and ensuring that the system fully supports accurate reporting and efficient operations.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the finance function in a growing organization while collaborating with a passionate and high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee the month-end and year-end close processes to ensure accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant reporting.
  • Manage the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement of financial processes and internal controls using NetSuite ERP as the system of record.
  • Own NetSuite administration for finance and accounting, including system configurations, custom reporting, saved searches, workflows, and integrations.
  • Collaborate with external tax and audit partners to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and successful completion of annual audits.
  • Partner with the CFO to provide actionable insights, financial analysis, and reporting to support decision-making.
  • Develop, document, and enforce accounting policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting team members as the function grows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA strongly preferred).
  • Extensive experience with NetSuite ERP (implementation, administration, reporting, workflows). Candidates without NetSuite expertise will not be considered.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a manager or controller-level role.
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proven experience managing month-end close, audit, and tax processes.
  • Proficiency with financial analysis, reporting, and process improvement.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate across functions.

We Require All Team Members:

  • Focus on autonomous thinking and a proactive approach to customer relationships.
  • Create high quality, clearly written documentation that explains work performed and solutions implemented.
  • Maintain a commitment to highly responsive communication with our customers and team members.
  • Interact with team members in such a way as to maintain a positive and collaborative atmosphere.
  • Strive for continued personal growth; contribute in an ongoing and proactive way to the growth of Charted as a company.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
