Render Technical Director – Night Shift
 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for monitoring and managing render queues, providing technical support and user assistance as required, ensuring that render nodes are running at maximum capacity and that tight render deadlines are met
  • Troubleshoot problematic, stalled, and failed jobs on the farm, flagging issues to the artist and production as required, especially if there is potential for deadlines to be missed
  • Keep open communication with production to understand deadlines and schedules, and factor that into decision making process for render priorities
  • Work directly with Pipeline and Engineering teams to build new tools and resolve render related issues, both on the farm, and in post/preprocessing stages
  • Recognize inefficiencies in existing tools and workflows, making efforts to improve wherever possible
  • Assist with the testing and deployment of new software versions, updates, and render related technologies on the farm
  • Regularly provide detailed reports on render statistics, health, and observations
  • Assist artists and support teams as needed to debug render and artistic issues with their work, making recommendations for optimizing tools and scripts
  • Understand potential impact to the farm, and usage of finite render resources when it comes to new initiatives and tools, such as the available licenses, bandwidth, disk usage, or render cycles
  • Other relevant duties as assigned by the manager

 

Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work a regular night shift
  • Strong Python programming skills are a preferred. Prior PyQT/PySide knowledge strongly recommended
  • Excellent experience supporting 3DS Max and Nuke a must. Maya, Houdini, and RedShift experience are a major plus
  • Prior experience managing common render queue engines, such as Qube or Deadline
  • Confidence is your ability to make accurate decisions under pressure
  • Excellent troubleshooting and debugging skills
  • Clear and thorough communication and documentation skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Proactive and highly motivated
  • Career focus for the visual effects industry strongly preferred
  • Ability and interest in learning new skills autonomously highly desired
