As a Concept Art Intern, you will create designs for characters and props for a game, collaborating closely with developers while using your artistic skills to solve visual challenges.
The summary above was generated by AI

As a Concept Art Intern at Riot you will bring characters and creatures to life. Drawing inspiration from as little as a napkin sketch or as much as a full-blown narrative concept, you will generate ideas and craft designs that are resonant, compelling and iconic. As a problem solver, first and foremost, you will help come up with visual solutions for game concepts.

As a Concept Artist Intern on the Teamfight Tactics Gameplay team, you’ll work closely with other developers to design creatures, props, and visual effects that enhance the game’s narrative and visual cohesion. You will collaborate across disciplines to ensure assets are implemented effectively, creatively solve design challenges and contribute feedback throughout production, helping shape assets that are both visually compelling and aligned with the game's artistic direction.

Responsibilities:
  • Sketch, ideate, and iterate concepts of creatures, props and VFX in collaboration with other developers
  • Develop detailed concept art and orthographs for 3D artists and animators to implement into working game assets
  • Creatively problem solve and figure out efficient solutions on executing the look and feel of the creatures, props and VFX
  • Collaborate closely with other disciplines to define concepts that are both narrative and visually cohesive
  • Support other disciplines throughout the production process with the implementation of the concepts, including giving feedback and paintovers
  • Take your knowledge of story tropes, archetypes, and narrative devices of all kinds to help improve the designs that go into our worlds
  • Bring your understanding of human and animal anatomy and know how to stretch the limits while still maintaining a consistent art direction
Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a college, university or non degree program
  • Graduating in the 2027 calendar year
  • Available to work full-time hours for the 12 week internship duration
  • Eligible to work in the country that you reside in during this remote program
  • Experience working with Photoshop or other relevant painting/design tools
  • Ability to showcase iterations and sketches in addition to the final rendered pieces.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Photoshop and painting/design tools
  • Demonstrated ability to digitally paint volumetric form and material differentiation in an isometric and orthographic view
  • Understanding of colors and value structure
  • Experience creating designs using inspiration from historical, fantasy, scifi, mainstream trends, and/or pop culture references
  • Great understanding designing characters reading in an isometric view
  • Inclusion of references, notes, studies, different angles, how a player interacts with a character or place, and why design choices have been made

For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes the delight of players. We will be looking at your past studies, experience, and your personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about the experiences of players, this could be the role for you!

General Portfolio Advice:

  • Please limit application submission to 1 role. You will automatically be considered for similar roles based on your portfolio
  • Online format is preferred (Artstation, personal websites, etc.).
  • If you have private work that is under NDA, please include the password in your application. Otherwise, we recommend you do not password protect your portfolio
  • Test that your Portfolio or reel is accessible. Please include access to your portfolio on your resume in addition to the application form in case the link breaks
  • Ensure your portfolio showcases your best work
  • Fan Art? Sure! It shows your versatility as it relates directly to our art style
  • Depending on the role, immersing yourself in the game to get the feel, tone and look can go a long way for your portfolio

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
