About Team / Role

The Commercial Legal Director for Mobility & Payments will be responsible for supporting, and manage direct reports in support of, WEX’s Mobility lines of business on complex commercial transactions and product development and launches in the Americas, including providing strategic and tactical advice to WEX’s commercial, digital, and marketing teams and engaging collaboratively with finance, operations, compliance, and other corporate function groups, as well as external advisers such as outside. This position will positively contribute to the execution of the Legal Department strategy by playing a key role in process improvement initiatives and partnering with Mobility business leaders to solve complex legal matters.

How You'll Make an Impact

The Commercial Legal Director will serve as a key legal partner and senior advisor for WEX Mobility operations across the Americas. This role combines strategic counsel, hands-on commercial drafting and negotiations, product life-cycle support, and team leadership to drive business growth while effectively mitigating risk for the company.

Strategic Legal Counsel & Leadership:

  • Cross-Functional Legal Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues in other areas of the Legal Department to identify risks and provide comprehensive legal advice to the Mobility lines of business
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and manage a team of legal professionals, overseeing work output to ensure risk-appropriate assessments and high-value legal support.
  • Executive Partnership: Cultivate strong advisory relationships with Mobility executives and cross-functional leaders across Product, Operations, Risk, Compliance, and Finance.
  • Department Strategy: Support the Legal Leadership Team in executing strategic initiatives.
  • Outside Counsel Management: Engage, instruct and oversee outside counsel and their work product.

Commercial Transactions & Business Integration:

  • Contract Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements—including customer credit, card program, reseller, marketing, referral, and technology contracts.
  • Growth Support: Drive legal due diligence and integration for M&A activity, support high-stakes RFP responses, and review marketing initiatives.
  • Process Optimization: Identify and lead process improvements across the team and the Legal Department, and apply industry best practices to commercial contracting, and creating and updating contract templates and negotiation playbooks.

Product Development & Operations:

  • Product Life-Cycle Support: Deliver solution-oriented guidance from initial product inception through commercial launch and ongoing technical evolution.
  • Terms & Governance: Draft and maintain product-related documentation, including application and API terms of use, integration terms, and website terms of service.
  • Risk & Dispute Management: Proactively identify, manage, and escalate business risks and guide team members in doing the same; manage pre-litigation disputes and contractual queries from customers or partners.

Experience You'll Bring

  • Education: J.D. required
  • Experience: 10 years of legal experience, ideally with in-house experience; licensed in at least one U.S. state
  • Experience in payments and/or financial services industries and related laws and regulations
  • Extensive experience in structuring, drafting and negotiating a wide range of complex commercial transactions (both sales and buy sides), including those for financial services, digital payment, technology, and with the public sector
  • Understanding of the legal and practical components of a product life cycle and experience in providing legal advice throughout the cycle
  • Experience in managing and supervising others
  • Experience with legal matter management system, contract lifecycle management systems, and AI tools and capabilities, with a keenness to experiment and incorporate AI into daily workflows
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellence in resourceful problem solving, detailed analysis, and issue resolution
  • Excellent ability to understand complex commercial, product and technical issues and business metrics
  • Effective organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills
  • Collaborative and can work as part of a team, while also being an independent self-starter
  • Ability to successfully lead process improvement initiatives that drive efficiencies impacting the legal team and the organization
  • Proactive in pursuit of continuous improvement, learning new skills, and addressing clients’ business needs with practical solutions
The base pay range represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position. Actual pay rates will vary and will be based on various factors, such as your qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base pay is one component of WEX's total compensation package. Most sales positions are eligible for commission under the terms of an applicable plan. Non-sales roles are typically eligible for a quarterly or annual bonus based on their role and applicable plan.
