Who We Are

Notion is the collaborative AI workspace where teams and agents think together. We're building one place where your knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools live side by side, so work is faster, clearer, and less fragmented. Millions of individuals, small teams, and large companies run their work on Notion.

Notinos (our employees) are customer zero in bringing this future of work to life. We care about craft, building things that last, and the belief that great work is still fundamentally human. Our goal isn’t to ship the next feature. Each and every team of Notinos is working to set the standard for how humans work together in the AI era. From building a business’s system of record to making and managing AI agents to automating away the busy work, we care deeply about giving our customers more time for their life’s work.

About the Role:

We are looking for an experienced attorney to join our Commercial Counsel team. This senior role will help build and support Notion’s rapidly evolving Enterprise customer sales motions, bringing deep expertise in negotiating complex AI SaaS agreements with enterprise customers, as well as acting as an advisor and coach to our account teams and cross functional partners. Notion is scaling rapidly, and we need people who work well as a tight-knit team with a passion for driving revenue deals to conclusion. If you enjoy using your deep industry and technology transaction expertise to support revenue generating functions, this role is for you.

Our Commercial Legal team sits at the center of Notion’s growth. We simplify how customers contract with us, take clear and unambiguous positions on AI, privacy, and security, and drive revenue deals to a fast, predictable close. That means exercising real judgment and finding creative, pragmatic paths forward through complex customer requests and requirements.

This role can be based in either San Francisco or New York City. We work from our offices on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (our Anchor Days) because we do our best thinking and building together in person. We’re looking for someone who’s excited to work alongside the team during those days.

What You'll Achieve:
  • Have broad responsibility for negotiating SaaS AI agreements and providing practical day-to-day commercial legal support - primarily in the Americas region - for the sales, marketing, channels, and customer success teams with a focus on supporting the Enterprise segment

  • Collaborate with Product Legal team on product and operational items that impact customer agreements and go-to-market initiatives

  • Draft and negotiate complex agreements regarding privacy, security, and AI regulatory matters

  • Identify and independently pursue process improvements for buy-side supporting motions

  • Develop and revise contract templates and playbooks as necessary, based on changes in our product offerings, organization, and law

Skills You'll Need to Bring:
  • Admitted to the California State Bar, New York State Bar, or Registered In-House Counsel in good standing

  • 10+ years of combined experience practicing as a commercial attorney within a law firm or software technology company

  • 2+ years in-house experience at a SaaS and/or AI technology company

  • Privacy and artificial intelligence subject matter expertise, including privacy regulations (GDPR, e-Privacy Directive, CCPA, etc.) and AI regulations (EU AI Act) with the ability to incorporate evolving requirements into the customer facing agreements

  • Experience driving commercial transactions, SaaS, and enterprise B2B transactions

  • Strong negotiation skills, including ability to explain nuanced legal concepts to internal and external parties and tailor approach to the audience

  • Excellent drafting, written and verbal communication skills and ability to adapt legal requirements in balanced, creative and pragmatic ways to facilitate communication at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to directly interact and build meaningful relationships and trust with internal and external clients and leaders

  • Demonstrated curiosity about AI and a willingness to adopt AI tools to work smarter, move faster, and deliver better results. Developing your personal AI fluency is required for this role

  • Resilience, resourcefulness, and the ability to make recommendations and decisions with imperfect facts

  • Independent and strategic thought combined with excellent team player qualities and a willingness to take on additional responsibilities

Nice to Haves:
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional or equivalent

  • Prior experience with a fast growing technology company

  • Experience supporting channel and reseller partnerships

  • Experience supporting customers in the financial services industry

  • Familiarity using Notion

Notion is committed to providing highly competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. The compensation offered for this role will be based on multiple factors such as location, the role’s scope and complexity, and the candidate’s experience and expertise, and may vary from the range provided below. For roles based in San Francisco or New York City, the estimated base salary range for this role is $280,000-340,000 per year.

A Note on AI

You don’t need deep AI expertise for every role, but we do expect every Notino to be intellectually curious, drawn to tinkering and discovery, and excited to use AI as a real collaborator in their work. For some roles, AI fluency is a core requirement — when that’s the case, we'll say so explicitly in the qualifications. People who thrive here don’t treat AI as a novelty. They use it to think better, and make their work easier for others to build on.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
