The Commercial Actuary role requires quantifying and communicating Virta's value through analyses, ROI reporting, and collaboration with stakeholders to support strategic client engagements.
The summary above was generated by AI

Virta Health is on a mission to transform type 2 diabetes and weight-loss care. Current treatment approaches aren’t working—over half of US adults have either type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, and obesity rates are at an all-time high. Virta is changing this by helping people reverse their metabolic condition through innovations in technology, personalized nutrition, and virtual care delivery reinvented from the ground up. We have raised over $350 million from top-tier investors, and partner with the largest health plans, employers, and government organizations to help their employees and members restore their health and take back their lives. Join us on our mission to reverse diabetes and obesity in one billion people.

This Commercial Actuary role will be central to Virta’s growth and client success by quantifying and communicating the value Virta delivers. From pre-sales opportunity analyses to ROI reporting for strategic clients, you’ll help both prospects and customers understand the financial impact of partnering with Virta. This is a highly external-facing role requiring both technical rigor and the ability to clearly communicate complex methodologies to sophisticated (and sometimes skeptical) audiences, as well as in simpler terms for broader stakeholders.

Responsibilities

As a Commercial Actuary at Virta, you will:

  • Support Sales with opportunity analyses: Lead value analytics for the most complex and strategic commercial engagements, including multi-stakeholder sales cycles and enterprise client ROI demonstrations.

  • Support client-specific ROI reporting: Serve as Virta’s senior external actuarial voice in strategic client and consultant discussions, defending methodologies and influencing external perspectives on ROI and value-based guarantees.

  • Design new analyses: Collaborate cross-functionally to invent new ways of quantifying the value of Virta’s current and emerging products and services.

  • Communicate with influence: Present complex actuarial and financial analyses in a clear, compelling way to diverse audiences — from actuarial experts to C-suite leaders.

  • Partner with Product and Analytics leadership to align on methodologies, while ensuring Virta’s commercial narratives are actuarially rigorous and market-credible.

  • Identify and anticipate market trends (GLP-1 adoption, PBM dynamics, value-based contracting shifts) and integrate these into commercial analyses and client-facing deliverables.

90 Day Plan

Within your first 90 days at Virta, we expect you will:

  • Become fluent in Virta’s clinical outcomes, value proposition, and actuarial methodology.

  • Build strong working relationships with Sales, Customer Success, and Marketing stakeholders.

  • Establish yourself as the go-to actuarial authority for Commercial leadership, supporting high-visibility deals.

  • Begin leading ROI methodology reviews with strategic clients and consultants, incorporating feedback and shaping how Virta is perceived externally.

  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships with Product Analytics to ensure consistent methodologies while tailoring narratives to commercial audiences.

Must-Haves
  • ASA or FSA designation, or equivalent actuarial credentials.

  • 10+ years of experience in healthcare actuarial work (payer, consulting, or vendor side).

  • Demonstrated success building and defending opportunity analyses and ROI models with employer, consultant, or payer audiences.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with ability to influence sophisticated stakeholders and translate technical analyses for non-technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated success influencing commercial strategy through actuarial insights, not just producing analyses.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong proficiency with Excel and actuarial modeling tools; ability to leverage Salesforce or similar CRM a plus.

Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience with chronic condition or weight management programs.

  • Familiarity with GLP-1 dynamics and other competing or complementary health solutions.

  • Exposure to commercial contracting, value-based arrangements, or outcomes-based guarantees.

  • Background in client-facing consulting or business development support.

Values-driven culture

Virta’s company values drive our culture, so you’ll do well if:

  • You put people first and take care of yourself, your peers, and our patients equally.

  • You have a strong sense of ownership and take initiative while empowering others to do the same.

  • You prioritize positive impact over busy work.

  • You have no ego and understand that everyone has something to bring to the table regardless of experience.

  • You appreciate transparency and promote trust and empowerment through open access of information.

  • You are evidence-based and prioritize data and science over seniority or dogma.

  • You take risks and rapidly iterate.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
