Startups change a lot, it’s part of what makes them exciting. At Transfyr, we’re not hiring for static roles or fixed titles. We’re looking for builders, thinkers, and doers who can help us tackle a range of “jobs to be done” that will arise over time and grow with us professionally as we grow as a company.

If you find yourself nodding along “yes, that’s me!” in more than a few categories or have true superpowers in one or two of these areas, that’s a good sign. If you’re “Hell-yes!” about our mission, adaptable across different
challenges, and the kind of culture carrier others want to follow, we want to talk to you.

We’re a startup, which means everyone wears a few hats. The people who thrive here are excited to build new things, learn in public, and collaborate deeply. You might be an expert in one area, growing fast in another, and pinch-hitting wherever needed, and that’s exactly how we like it. We are not actively recruiting for all of these roles, but want to hear from you so we can reach out if your interest and experiences align with jobs we need to get done over time.

CS / Engineering

  • Build the sensor stack in the lab: You are an engineer who can rapidly prototype a robust sensor stack across multiple modalities (audio, visual, RFID, environmental, equipment readouts). You think carefully about how each component integrates with data pipelines and how the data will be structured
    for downstream use.

    • You would be excited to talk about: How would you capture the subtle nuances of scientific execution in a way that could train and tune a model for automated science?

  • Data harmonization / segmentation: You excel at bringing order to messy, multimodal datasets. You can align video, audio, metadata, and instrument outputs into a coherent structure that is searchable, consistent, and ready for machine learning applications.

    • You would be excited to talk about: How would you approach segmentation of a multi-modal (vision, audio, tabular) time series containing information about actions, perturbations, and results?

  • Computer Vision: You are skilled at designing computer vision systems that can extract information from images and video at scale. You understand how to build efficient search pipelines and intermediate representations that preserve meaning and enable deeper analysis.

    • You would be excited to talk about: How would you parse complex visual datasets, and what representations would you use to make them useful for downstream tasks?

  • ML / RL Stack ("build intelligence with the data"): You design systems that can learn from large, multimodal datasets. You are motivated by the challenge of building pipelines that generate mechanistic insights, enable transfer learning, and support agentic reasoning about scientific execution and
    results.

    • You would be excited to talk about: How would you build ML systems that can reason about the relationship between experimental actions and scientific outcomes?

  • Full Stack Engineering: You are a software builder who makes intelligence accessible to scientists through thoughtful interfaces and tools. You know how to translate complex models into systems that provide clear, actionable guidance at the bench.

    • You would be excited to talk about: What’s the right balance between speed, simplicity, and scalability in full-stack architecture? How do you know when to refactor versus when to live with a little mess? What makes an architecture “elegant” in practice, not just in theory?

  • XR: You are thinking ahead about how immersive technologies will change the way scientific knowledge is delivered. You see opportunities to use XR for proactive, real-time guidance rather than relying on static instructions.

    • You are excited to engage us about the roadmap for XR hardware and software capabilities

  • Technical Product Management (“FDE”): You move seamlessly between customer conversations and technical specifications. You have wet lab experience, enough engineering skill to prototype solutions, and a strong bias toward validating hypotheses by deeply engaging with users.

    • You would be excited to talk about: How would you build conviction in the right first product to build?

  • "Black Hole" Team Builder: You are someone that exceptional people want to work with. You know how to identify and attract top talent, and you can persuade them to join in a resourceful and cost-effective way.

    • You can answer: Who would you bring with you if you joined, and why would they follow you?

  • Technical mentorship / leadership: You set a high bar through your own technical and operational excellence. You help other engineers and scientists grow, ensuring the team performs at its best collectively as well as individually.

    • You can answer: How do you create an environment where a team of top engineers and researchers can perform at their highest level?

Biology

  • Lab Operations: You keep labs running smoothly and compliantly. You manage inventory, oversee R&D study execution, and ensure both full-time and temporary staff are set up for success in their work.

    • You are excited to talk about: How would you structure lab processes to ensure reliability, compliance, and scalability?

  • Biology expertise: You bring deep subject matter expertise in biology and have been considered “magic hands” or are adept at developing novel protocols / assays. You help evaluate and refine protocols, ensuring experiments are scientifically rigorous and reproducible.

    • You are excited to talk about: How would you assess whether an experimental protocol is robust? How would you design it for maximal reproducibility?

Business / Operations

  • Program / Project Management: You are detail-oriented and relentless about customer success. You know how to plan and execute complex deployments in lab environments, with enough technical literacy to ensure smooth implementation.

    • You are excited to talk about: How do you design a program for maximum success within the constraints of running a business? What would you do if something went wrong?

  • Business Development: You turn conversations into opportunities. You work closely with leadership to shape pitches, craft proposals, and negotiate contracts that move the business forward. You know what good looks like, can very quickly read someone else’s mind and turn that vision into reality on a
    page.

    • You can demonstrate: What would you do to turn Opportunity X into a signed partnership?

  • Visual storytelling: You know how to take data and make it meaningful. You create compelling visuals and narratives that help customers, employees, and partners see the value of what is being built.

    • You can answer: Now that you understand our story a bit, how would you show it?

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
