Job Announcement: Chief of Staff

About mRelief

mRelief is a mission-driven technology nonprofit operating across all 50 states with a team of approximately 20 employees. We provide an easy-to-use platform through web, text messaging, and voice that helps people sign up for government benefits such as SNAP (food stamps), and WIC (women, infants, and children). To date, we have helped over 5 million families connect to social services and unlocked over $2.4 billion in food stamp benefits. Our mission is to transform access to social services for the inherent dignity of all people.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Chief of Staff  to step into a newly created full-time leadership role. Reporting directly to the ED, you will serve as a strategic and operational partner to help build and scale internal processes, drive cross-functional initiatives, and bring structure to a thoughtful and evolving organization.

This role subsumes all internal operations functions. You will support the ED and CTO with operational, financial, and administrative duties, and act as the primary go-to person for organizational problem-solving. Being the hub for synthesizing where mRelief is headed in the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Organizational Alignment: Serve as a thought-partner to our ED and senior leadership team to identify and resolve organizational challenges. Act as organizational aligner, translating overarching strategic themes into operable goals. Cultivate cross-departmental integration and implement clear governance and decision-making protocols that empower leadership, clarify authority, and enable swift execution as we continue to scale.
  • Organizational Design and Management: Act as an organizational design strategist, forecasting long-term departmental needs. Champion institutional knowledge management by auditing current practices to identify formalization gaps within the teams. You will manage multiple roles within the organization, including the Operations Manager, Client Support Manager, Project Manager, and various contractors.
  • Workflow Management: As our "problem-solver in chief," you will examine, propose, and implement standard operating procedures, policies, and tech-based tools at a strategic level. You will oversee the remote workplace platforms, namely Slack and Asana, that streamline workflows and boost team productivity.
  • Culture and Internal Communication: Champion mRelief's core values at a macro level, shaping an environment where the mission thrives. Drive high-level internal communications and champion initiatives that support engagement. Deliver executive messaging to keep our distributed team deeply connected to the broader vision.
  • Financial Stewardship and Risk Management: Act as the executive bridge for financial and operational health. Partner with the ED and Board of Directors to align the $5M+ budget with strategic priorities, monitoring cash-flow and ensure organizational resources are deployed efficiently across all teams. You will coordinate invoicing, and maintain the organization’s insurance policies and legal compliance standards.
  • Governance and State Compliance: Oversee organizational compliance with legal and operational standards across geographies. Act as the connective tissue between our ED and our expert policy, data, and partnerships teams to manage necessary reporting requirements. You will serve as a key operational liaison when necessary to add capacity to new/existing partnerships with state governments.
  • Project Leadership and Support: Lead complex, time-sensitive cross-departmental projects, high-budget multi-year grants, and various strategic committees. You will also assist the development team with staff-related fundraising content and DEI reporting.
  • Client Partnerships: Guide client interactions, supervise the client support team to ensure high-quality service delivery, coordinate software translation projects into Spanish and Haitian Creole, and collaborate with account managers to execute MOUs with partner organizations.

Qualifications and Characteristics

  • A highly adaptable operator who is comfortable with ambiguity, can pivot quickly, and is energized by building systems in an outcome-driven environment.
  • Resilient and confident with strong follow-through and the ability to work effectively with a direct, fast-paced ED who has high expectations and a public affairs background.
  • Effective project manager with success executing complex projects and managing multiple high-stakes interests, reporting requirements, and stakeholders.
  • Skilled at translating complex processes to colleagues, funders, clients, and partners.
  • Experience in fundraising and managing annual budgets of over $5 million.
  • A strong passion for mRelief’s mission, civic technology, and creating innovative solutions (experience in the public aid or food stamps field is a plus).

Compensation, Location and Benefits

  • Salary: $140,000 Base .
  • Status: Full-time, exempt.
  • Location: remote but prefer employees in Illinois, Texas, California, or Maryland
  • Benefits: mRelief provides a comprehensive benefits package, including:
    • Health, Vision, and Dental Coverage: 100% coverage for all employees, and 40% coverage for dependents. FSA accounts are also available.
    • Retirement: 401K matching of 100% up to 3% of contributions, and 50% up to 6% of contributions (a total maximum match of 4.5%).
    • Paid Time Off (PTO): 15 paid vacation days annually, plus 10 sick days, in addition to the annual December 24-31 office closure.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
