StartX is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a unique peer-innovation ecosystem of over 3,000 Stanford founders, industry experts, and venture capitalists. We do not take equity, and we do not charge our founders. Our sole mission is to accelerate the impact of the world's top entrepreneurs through a powerful, trusted community network.
To keep this massive, world-class engine running seamlessly, we operate with a lean, highly collaborative internal team. We are looking for an exceptional, detail-oriented operator to serve as our Chief of Staff for Operations & Talent.
The RoleAs the Chief of Staff (CoS) for Operations & Talent, you will essentially act as our junior COO. Your primary mission is to ensure the internal ship runs flawlessly. You will sit at the intersection of team execution, organizational structure, and talent strategy—turning high-level vision into scannable, manageable, and highly successful deliverables.
This is a role for a master organizer who loves systems, thrives on keeping projects on track, and understands how to design internal frameworks that motivate a high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities1. Operational Excellence & Project Management (Make the Ship Run Well)Drive the OKR Process: Own the end-to-end quarterly and annual Goal Setting (OKR) cycles. Ensure every department translates broad strategic goals into concrete, measurable key results with clear ownership.
Manage to Deliverables: Keep the internal leadership and program teams accountable to deadlines. You will build and maintain the dashboards, project trackers, and documentation required to flag risks before they become bottlenecks.
Meeting & Workflow Architecture: Structure internal team meetings, operational syncs, and retrospectives to ensure they are high-yield, action-oriented, and documented.
Incentive & Performance Design: Design, implement, and iterate on internal incentive programs and talent development frameworks that motivate staff and align with our non-profit, community-first mission.
Team & Resource Assignment: Continuously evaluate team bandwidth, skill sets, and project loads to optimize internal team assignments, ensuring the right people are on the right initiatives.
Culture & Retention: Act as a pulse-check for the internal organization, developing initiatives that foster continuous learning, operational clarity, and high retention.
Optimize the Talent Funnel: Build, scale, and manage our end-to-end recruiting funnels for full-time staff, contractors, and our highly competitive student/volunteer internship programs.
Sourcing & Selection Systems: Design structured, unbiased interview loops and project-based assessments that screen for the rare combination of high intellectual curiosity, empathy, and operational rigor required at StartX.
Super Organized & Detail-Oriented: You have a borderline obsessive love for clean systems, flawless spreadsheets, and documented processes. To you, an unmapped dependency is a problem waiting to happen.
An Execution Engine: You don't just strategize; you build the roadmap and push it across the finish line. You hold yourself and others to an exceptionally high standard of delivery.
Systems Thinker for People: You understand that "talent" isn't just about hiring—it’s an operational system. You see how recruiting funnels, compensation/incentive design, and performance milestones fit together to build a world-class culture.
Adaptable & Low-Ego: StartX is a highly dynamic, founder-led environment. You can jump from auditing a recruiting pipeline to adjusting a financial incentive model without missing a beat.
4–7 years of experience in high-growth startup operations, People Operations / HR strategy, management consulting, or a Chief of Staff role.
Proven track record of managing complex, cross-functional projects with tight deliverables.
Deep familiarity with modern operational tooling (e.g., Notion, Slack, CRM architectures, and advanced spreadsheet modeling).
Experience or deep familiarity with the Stanford, Silicon Valley, or broader venture capital ecosystem is a significant plus.
