Position Summary

The Charge Nurse provides clinical leadership and oversight on their assigned unit or shift, supporting nursing staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, and assisting the Nurse Manager with daily operations. This role combines hands-on patient care with supervisory responsibilities, serving as a key point of contact for staff, patients, and families during the shift.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and clinical support in accordance with facility policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations
  • Supervise, direct, and support nursing staff (RNs, LVNs/LPNs, CNAs) during assigned shifts
  • Serve as a resource for staff regarding clinical questions, escalations, and patient care decisions
  • Assist with staffing assignments, breaks, and shift coverage to ensure appropriate staffing ratios
  • Monitor patient census, acuity, and care needs, adjusting staff assignments as necessary
  • Support onboarding, training, and mentorship of new and existing staff
  • Assist the Nurse Manager with performance monitoring, scheduling, and administrative duties
  • Respond to and help resolve patient, family, or staff concerns in a timely and professional manner
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, safety, and quality assurance standards
  • Participate in audits, chart reviews, and quality improvement initiatives as needed
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, ancillary staff, and other departments
  • Step into Nurse Manager duties in their absence, as needed
QualificationsQualifications
  • Current, active RN or LVN/LPN license in good standing (per facility/state requirements)
  • Minimum [2 years] of clinical nursing experience; prior charge or supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Current BLS certification required; ACLS/other certifications may be required depending on unit
  • Working knowledge of healthcare regulations and facility policies
  • Reliable, professional, and team-oriented
