The Capital Budget Analyst (“Analyst”) is an integral member of the Budget Department in the developing and managing of Berklee’s capital budget cycle. Validate that appropriate sources of funding are identified and applied for capital and related non-capital projects. Partner with Cost Center Managers across the institution identifying short-term and long-term capital needs. Conduct ongoing variance analysis, depreciation and interest expense projections. Including reporting and analysis of Berklee’s performance against budget. Reporting to the Associate Director for Budget and Financial Planning (“Associate Director”), and collaborating closely with the Senior Director for Budget and Financial Planning (“Director”) the Analyst is responsible for maintaining the College’s annual capital budget, depreciation, leasing, and bond interests, monthly forecasts, long term financial models, and any decision support or other special projects as needed to inform the Vice President for Finance, Chief Financial Officer and senior leadership in decision making and ensuring prudent stewardship of the college’s resources. Partner with Real Estate and Facilities departments to assist in budget development, maintenance and analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Annual Budget Contribute to the development of Berklee’s operating and capital budgets, as well as multi-year financial plans through systems set-up and maintenance, provision of end-user support, development of analytic, review and presentation materials, and line-item capital budget development.  Collaborate with Associate Director in developing consolidated budgets and analysis to inform and support decision making aligned with strategic objectives.

  • Reporting, Forecasting & Analysis Conduct ongoing review, analysis and development of capital budgets, depreciation, leasing, and bond interest forecasts.  Monitor performance against budget objectives, analyzing variances, forecasting anticipated results, and recommending corrective actions as needed.  Collaborate with the Accounting team to ensure close communication on results and variance analysis.  Ensure accuracy, automation and timeliness of financial and managerial reports.  Prepare analyses of capital plans and projects including real estate and facilities financial performance to inform senior leadership, area leadership and departmental budget managers.  Develop and implement new techniques for financial analysis to meet departmental needs as required, leveraging report-writing tools     

  • Systems & Processes – Serve as primary departmental subject matter expert, (SME) in Capital Budget reconciliations, reporting,  and maintenance to ensure short-term and  long-term forecast deliverables; ensure data integrity of the Adaptive Planning & Workday Capital Budget models.  Liaise with the Accounting team to ensure and maintain the data  integrity of capital budget and actual data, performing analysis and reconciliation required.  Execute and track approved, out-of-cycle budget adjustments.  Develop and maintain procedural documentation for all phases of assigned functions.  In the spirit of continuous improvement, work with the Associate Director and relevant colleagues to evaluate policies, procedures and methodologies to ensure best practices are employed.   

  • Customer Service & Support Serve as primary resource to capital budget managers at all levels within portfolio model framework, partnering with them to assist in budget development, maintenance and analysis.  Educate and train the capital budget community on relevant systems and processes; serve as the key resource during the annual budget preparation cycle, conducting group and individual training sessions.    

 

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  Relevant advanced degree, or equivalent professional experience, in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration is highly desirable. 

  • Proficient in property, plant and fixed asset accounting and budgeting

  • Ability to track and monitor a variety of capital project budgets and ensure that those projects will be funded adequately.

  • Minimum of 3-5  years related professional experience, with a strong working knowledge of accounting and financial principles and the ability to develop, analyze and communicate financial information at an institution of higher education.

  • High proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, and a demonstrated ability to employ multiple systems in the tracking, modeling and analysis of financial information.  Workday and Adaptive Insights experience are a plus.  Facility and comfort with forecasting anticipated outcomes based on limited data and evolving assumptions.      

  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment, discretion, and diplomacy.  Ability to handle sensitive data with discretion, employ creative problem solving, and identify and deploy process improvements.

  • Collaborative working style and the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships across a variety of functional areas with colleagues of all levels.  Demonstrated capacity to develop and foster effective working relationships with individuals reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives, and experiences.

  • Process improvement focus and ability to leverage technology to drive automation and enhancements.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, presentation skills, and the presence to interact with senior leadership.

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and work under pressure; self-motivation, high energy and engagement and a positive attitude.
