CAP Summer Associate – United States
Location: Los Angeles
Program Duration: 10 weeks

Shape the Future Through Insight

At Capital Group, our mission is to improve people’s lives through successful investing. Our Capital Associates Program (CAP) invites exceptional early-career individuals who combine relentless curiosity, analytical rigor, collaborative leadership, and independent thinking to help us tackle some of the world’s most complex and consequential investment questions.

CAP is not a typical internship – it’s a highly selective, immersive experience designed for students who want to think deeply, challenge assumptions, and learn about Capital’s unique investment process.

A Truly Differentiated Internship Experience

The CAP Summer Internship is designed for students who excel at deep research and sustained inquiry. You’ll investigate complex investment questions that require original insights, careful judgment, and the ability to synthesize information across disciplines. The emphasis is on rigorous research—examining industries, assessing long-term forces, and developing well-reasoned perspectives when answers are rarely obvious.

You’ll have the autonomy to shape your own research approach, explore ideas in depth, and produce thoughtful analysis that contributes to Capital Group’s long-term investment thinking. Intern projects address real-world challenges and explore emerging opportunities across global markets. Recent intern research topics have included:

  • Commercializing Nuclear Energy

  • Europe’s Energy Mix Over the Next 10–20 Years

  • The Business Jet Industry

  • Deep Dive on Humanoids

How You’ll Contribute and Develop

  • Ownership of Substantive Research: Lead an end-to-end investment research project that rewards curiosity, intellectual discipline, and strong writing. You’ll frame the question, conduct deep analysis, and present clear, well-supported conclusions to senior investors.

  • Development Through Practice: Strengthen your analytical reasoning, research process, and communication skills through hands-on work, mentorship, and targeted development sessions.

  • Exposure to Professional Investment Research: Work closely with analysts and portfolio managers to see how rigorous inquiry, qualitative insight, and disciplined thinking inform real investment decisions.

  • A Global Community of Thinkers: Join a small, high-calibre cohort of interns across London, Los Angeles, and Singapore—students from diverse academic backgrounds united by intellectual curiosity and an interest in finance.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome applications from undergraduate and master’s students (non-MBA) graduating between December 2027 and July 2028.

When we hire for CAP, we look for raw talent and potential. Ideal candidates demonstrate:

  • Analytical, Fast Learners: Strong quantitative problem-solvers who quickly absorb new ideas, challenge assumptions, and turn complexity into clear, actionable insights.

  • Academic Excellence: Consistent high achievement (preferred GPA 3.7+). Double majors, minors, and interdisciplinary study are valued.

  • Adaptable High Performers: Thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments; receptive to feedback and able to balance rigorous academics with leadership, work, or side projects.

  • Collaborative Leaders: Proven ability to lead, influence, and contribute meaningfully within teams across academic, professional, or extracurricular settings.

  • Investing Curiosity: Demonstrated interest in investing through student organizations, competitions, coursework, or independent learning.

  • Unique Perspective: Bring distinctive life experiences or passions—athletics, music, creative pursuits, global exposure, or deep expertise in a specific area.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
