About Numeral

Numeral is building the automation backbone for internet commerce — starting with the painful world of sales tax compliance. We handle everything from registration to remittance, delivering a white-glove service so e-commerce businesses can stay laser-focused on what they do best: growing their products, customers, and teams.

We’re one of the fastest-growing companies from Y Combinator’s W23 batch, backed by top-tier investors including Benchmark Capital. Our team has deep roots from the early days at Stripe, Airbnb, Notion, and other breakout companies — and now we’re bringing that same level of craft, speed, and ambition to a space that’s long overdue for reinvention.

Numeral is small but mighty. Growth is already borderline unmanageable — which means every hire we make now will directly shape the trajectory of the company. If you’re excited about joining as an early team member and want the kind of ownership that defines careers, we want to meet you.

Mission

Running an online business today means wearing a thousand hats — most of them not the reason founders started their company. Our mission is to eliminate the administrative and accounting burdens that distract businesses from doing what they love.

We’ve already helped hundreds of merchants avoid the headache of building giant finance teams just to manage tax compliance. Tomorrow, we’re scaling that impact even further: building the automation layer that lets internet businesses stay nimble, compliant, and future-proof.

About the role:
  • At Numeral, we’re tackling one of the most complex and painful global business problems: sales tax compliance. From VAT and GST to other indirect taxes, we’re automating the most manual, murky, and error-prone parts of global tax workflows—unlocking speed, scale, and sanity for growing businesses.

  • As we expand internationally, we’re looking for an Business Operations Generalist to be a core builder of our compliance and operations engine. This is not a back-office role—this is a front-line builder role. You’ll architect scalable systems, support global launches, and be a first responder for client needs, all while enabling our internal teams to operate at a higher level.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and Scale Operational Workflows - Build repeatable processes for VAT/GST compliance in new countries—from registration and filings to data ingestion. Capture these in clear SOPs, guidance docs, and playbooks to enable others to execute at scale.

  • Lead Execution and Process Ownership - Own the full lifecycle: research a new workflow, pilot it, document it, train teammates, and iterate continuously. Be hands-on in bringing new countries and compliance protocols online.

  • Support Client Management & Reactivity - Jump into reactive client requests and edge cases. Use this front-line exposure to improve internal processes, close knowledge gaps, and elevate the overall customer experience. It’s a great learning loop for future operations leaders.

  • Be a Forensic Problem-Solver - Use limited signals to get to the heart of complex operational issues. You should thrive on piecing together incomplete information and forming defensible recommendations quickly.

  • Enable the Team Through Documentation & Guidance -Be the note-taker, the framework builder, and the process enabler. We’re capacity-constrained on internal enablement, and your ability to write, explain, and teach operational systems will unlock team performance immediately.

  • Partner Across Teams for International Growth - Work with BizOps, Product, and external partners to power country expansions. Where needed, source and activate local tax experts to get us over the compliance finish line.

Qualifications:
  • Thrive in high-agency, zero-precedent environments—ambiguity energizes you rather than scares you.

  • Bring 0–3 years of experience in consulting, banking, BizOps, or another high-pressure, analytical role—or you’re a high-agency new grad with a track record of delivering on complex, operationally intensive projects.

  • Balance meticulous research with a bias to action - you know when “good enough today” beats “perfect next week.”

  • Think in systems and structure - processes, metrics, and mental models are your native language, and you can diagram a workflow as easily as you can explain it.

  • Are disciplined, detail-oriented, and unafraid of grinding when the mission calls for it.

  • Communicate with clarity - whether summarizing a 30-country onboarding workflow or training a teammate through a country-specific tax setup.

  • Excel in forensic problem-solving—you can work from limited hints and messy data to uncover root causes and propose clear, confident next steps.

  • Are enablement-minded - you see value in good documentation, note-taking, and building tools that make others more effective.

  • Embrace direct client interaction as a way to learn, spot gaps, and drive continuous improvement in internal processes.

Bonus Points For:
  • Exposure to tax, accounting, regulatory ops, or fintech.

  • Experience with tools like Notion, Airtable, process automation tools, or collaborative documentation.

Why Join Us?
  • Be a core builder in an ambitious, globally minded startup.

  • Learn hands-on how to scale international compliance systems.

  • Work across functions and with leadership early in your career.

  • Make a visible impact immediately through enablement and operational design.

  • Enjoy a flexible, remote-first culture with strong mentorship and ownership opportunities.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
