Role Overview
- As our Business Intelligence Lead, you’ll be the hands-on owner of reporting and insights at Skillshare. You’ll partner directly with executives and cross-functional teams to deliver consistent, actionable metrics and a clear understanding of what drives performance.
- You’ll balance strategic thinking with execution — writing advanced SQL, building dashboards, and delivering weekly reporting — while shaping KPI frameworks and lightweight processes that scale. You’ll work closely with Marketing, Finance, and Product to translate data into decisions that drive acquisition, retention, and long-term growth. Because this role partners heavily with Marketing, a strong understanding of funnels and attribution (first-touch, last-touch, multi-touch) is important.
- You’ll collaborate with Data Engineering to navigate our modeling layer (dbt) and align on priorities; owning the warehouse is not part of this role. This is an IC role to start (team of one) with potential to evolve as BI needs scale.
What You’ll Do
- Deliver reliable business reporting across weekly, monthly, and quarterly cadences; maintain trusted executive and team dashboards.
- Write high-quality, performant SQL (complex joins, window functions, CTEs, conditional aggregates) to analyze large, modeled datasets and answer ad-hoc questions quickly and accurately.
- Define and maintain KPI definitions and a clear metric catalog; ensure consistency across reporting and tools.
- Investigate performance drivers through deep dives into marketing acquisition funnels, attribution models (MTA, first-touch/last-touch), retention/churn, cohorts, and engagement to surface actionable opportunities
- Act as the “first responder” for ad-hoc business questions; triage, size impact, and recommend next steps.
- Partner with Data Engineering to understand lineage and semantics in the dbt modeling layer, flag data quality issues, propose improvements, and help set DE priorities related to BI needs (without owning the warehouse itself).
- Establish lightweight BI processes (versioned queries, QA checks, documentation standards) that prepare for future analyst hires and scale with the business.
Why We’re Excited About You
- 5–7 years in analytics/BI (or related), with deep hands-on SQL expertise and strong BI tool experience (Looker required; Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent a plus).
- Proven ability to convert complex data into clear, actionable insights that influence executive and team decisions.
- Comfortable balancing tactical execution (dashboards, reporting, advanced SQL) with strategic thinking (KPI frameworks, forward-looking analyses, process design).
- Proven experience with marketing analytics — including funnel analysis, campaign/channel performance, and attribution models — and experience partnering with Marketing, Finance, and Product.
- Strong communicator who can distill complexity for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Startup-minded operator: resourceful, proactive, and focused on high-leverage work.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with dbt concepts (models, tests, docs, snapshots, macros/Jinja) and the ability to read/trace existing models to inform analyses.
- Experience with Git-based analytics workflows and CI for data tests; understanding of orchestration patterns (e.g., Airflow, Dagster) and EL tools.
- Dimensional modeling, semantic layers (e.g., LookML), and experimentation frameworks.
