Position: Broadcast Operations Manager

Provide oversight of the engineering operational personnel, scheduling, manpower budget, active broadcast equipment usage to include knowledge of all broadcast equipment utilized by the department, and studio production.  Operational oversight to include production control rooms, cameras, studios, audio, and digital and streaming systems.  This position also provides specialized planning and execution of broadcast projects as they arise.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage and oversight of broadcast operations, including, but not limited to, engineering operations and personal; studio and control room productions; studio and facility building operations; and follow through of operational discrepancies. Interface with contributory departments as need arises to ensure on air broadcast, production and news product flows smoothly. Work with current management to develop and implement training disciplines and schedules for all technical areas. Assist in maintaining station business continuity plan (disaster recovery plan) with others. Scheduling duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

Possess a well-balanced and comprehensive understanding of both the job positions and equipment in a broadcast facility.  Good communication and leadership skills.  Useful personality traits are attention to detail and curiosity.

Minimum educational requirements are a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and prior management or supervisory experience with at least six years of broadcast and or production experience in more than three specialties. Ability to work varied hours as required to accommodate Broadcast Operations. This would include live news broadcasts, special events, remotes and rotating shifts to cover daily news shows."

COMPLEXITY:

Ability to interface with other departments.  Excellent leadership and communication skills.  Strong background in broadcast and production techniques. Knowledge and understanding of CTV and other digital and streaming processes.  Knowledge and understanding of automation systems. A self-starter and reliable person who can contribute to any situation is desirable.  Needs to have good organizational and business skills.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS:

The managers decisions directly impact the labor budget; Thus, impacting the financial performance of the department.  Good decisions often generate employee efficiency and impacts morale.  When morale is high, performance increases.  Well executed planning holds down new equipment purchases and downtime.  Costly errors are prevented or eliminated by proper directions. 

WORK RELATIONS:

Contact with Traffic and Operations contributes heavily towards the on-air broadcast quality both in anticipating and fixing problems.  Contact with Promotion and Programming and the News Departments to ensure their product gets to air with an eye to anticipating any issues and fixing issues when they arise.  Continual contact with Production should be made to coordinate sports and studio productions.  Externally, this position must interface with everyone from the occasional view call, the satellite coordination centers, product manufacturers, and outside producers.

Compensation - $130k+ commensurate with experience and skill level
