Instrument is a digitally native design and technology company built to help brands unlock their full potential. Since 2005, our team of makers, thinkers, and storytellers has partnered with leading brands like Google, Nike, Uber, ŌURA, and Eventbrite to craft digital experiences that create impact and drive results.

Unlike traditional agencies, we don’t just design—we build. Our work lives at the intersection of taste and technology, powered by curiosity, thoughtful curation, and a commitment to delivering the most fitting solution for every brief. We bring this to life across three core offerings: Brand, Marketing, and Product.

As a member of our freelance network, you’ll collaborate with our teams to bring bold ideas to life—whether launching new brands, building digital products, or shaping experiences that move people. We welcome collaborators from all backgrounds and experiences who share our curiosity, creativity, and care for craft.

We believe great work comes from diverse perspectives and shared purpose. If you’re passionate about learning, experimenting, and making work that matters, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking to connect with versatile freelance Brand / Visual Designers to join our extended creative bench. This isn’t for one specific project — it’s an opportunity to partner with us on future brand engagements across a wide range of clients and industries.

You’re a designer who can build powerful visual systems from initial concepts through multi-channel application. You create distinctive visual identities, design systems, graphic toolkits, brand guidelines, and integrated campaigns that express the true essence of a brand.

You think expansively about how to create multi-faceted, resilient systems that evolve over time and across touchpoints. You get equally excited about evolving an established brand as you do building something entirely new from the ground up.

You’ll work on focused, collaborative teams alongside strategists, writers, producers, and developers. Collaboration isn’t a buzzword here — you’ll partner closely with colleagues and clients with diverse perspectives and expertise to create thoughtful, enduring work.

  • Build brand identities and systems, as well as connect guidelines to applications across channels
  • Understand our clients’ needs—learning the boundaries of their brands—while pushing them into new territories
  • Translate brand strategy into powerful visual identity systems from start to finish with a flexible, channel agnostic approach
  • Take ideas from concept to build ready assets, employing sharp typography and graphic design
  • Work on a multi-disciplinary team in a highly collaborative environment with diverse perspectives and expertise
  • Embrace challenges and inspire new ways of thinking and approaching design problems

What You'll Bring

  • Experience building brand identities and systems, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects that meet client goals and are successful in form and function
  • Demonstrated experience shipping exceptional visual work, with your role clearly defined on each project in your portfolio
  • Experience working on cross-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to move quickly to prove out ideas
  • Strong understanding of current industry tools with the ability to adapt to new technologies
  • Strategic problem solving skills and the capacity to distill complex information into meaningful concepts, ideas, and designs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
