The big picture: Axios is a growth-stage company dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We're hiring a mid-level Brand Designer to focus on our Events and Growth initiatives.

Why it Matters: This person will work within the Brand Design team designing for live events, growth marketing campaigns, landing pages, emails and newsletters, social media and more, making sure that everything we do always looks and feels like Axios.

Go Deeper: We are looking for a talented, multi-disciplinary Brand Designer who will work within a collaborative team that supports many other departments in the company, including our Axios Live (live events) and Growth teams. You will be leveraging, storytelling, layout, typography and motion, to help our team design high-quality deliverables that are clear, smart and engaging. You will work in a constantly evolving environment to protect, refine and grow the Axios brand.

The Details:  In this role, you will make an impact to Axios through the following responsibilities:

  • Design a variety of assets (both digital and in print), making sure they are consistently on brand
  • Ideate, iterate and refine new brands and visual identity systems that live within the larger Axios brand
  • Design within existing brand systems, evolving and refining them when necessary
  • Think of the Axios brand holistically, identifying and flagging when something feels off
  • Update and contribute to our brand guidelines
  • Self-manage your projects, navigating ambiguity, communicating with stakeholders, respecting deadlines
  • Collaborate with other team members and on occasion provide feedback and guidance to more junior team members
  • Update information on landing pages using Webflow

Requirements:

  • You are a mid-level designer with a strong portfolio showing an understanding of the design craft, including typography, color, layout, etc.
  • You are comfortable designing for print, web, experiential environments and on-stage live graphics
  • You are able to design and deliver projects following creative direction and brand guidelines
  • You can work on all stages of design, from ideation to execution of finalized assets
  • You are able to execute on a creative direction and come up with new ideas or concepts
  • You think about the future with your designs having a clear sense of scalability and the ability to fit within a system
  • You are able to present work to stakeholders, take feedback graciously and defend your ideas when needed
  • We are a remote team, so you are well organized and always communicative
  • We are a small team working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. You show initiative and flexibility to help our team work smarter and to meet our deadlines.
  • Everything you do is designed to the highest standard, both in concept and execution
  • 3+ years design experience at an agency or in-house
  • A strong portfolio showing brand design work (both applying existing branding guidelines and creating new brands from scratch) across multiple mediums
  • Proficient in design software (Adobe creative suite, Figma, etc)
  • Experience self-managing projects with some degree of ambiguity, with minimal direction
  • Comfortable presenting work to different stakeholders (from teammates to leadership)
  • A clear sense of design work process, from briefing to execution

Nice-to-haves:

Our team wears a lot of hats and supports many different departments, so aside from being a talented and experienced brand designer, we’re interested in anything else you bring to the table. Let us know your other skills, such as:

  • Marketing design
  • Preparing files for print
  • Webflow
  • Motion design
  • Film or video editing
  • Illustration
  • Events or experiential design
  • Signage or wayfinding
  • Experience working on brand guidelines
  • Color theory
  • Merchandising and swag design

What Axios brings to the table besides salary:

  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Robust PPO and High Deductible health insurance options on the Blue Cross Blue Shield network
  • Employer Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution for the high deductible health plan option

  • OneMedical membership, including tele-health services
  • Personal health advocacy resources through HealthAdvocate
  • Inclusive fertility, hormonal health and family forming benefits through Carrot Fertility
  • Access to the Axios “Family Fund”, which was created to allow employees to request financial support when facing financial hardship or emergencies
  • Increased work flexibility for parents and caretakers
  • Virtual company-sponsored social events
  • A strong and positive work environment
  • A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $70,000 - $90,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
