Downing Capital Group- Brand Designer

Who We Are

Members of the Downing Capital Group team are investor-entrepreneurs. We are a new breed of investment firm: our team members are business builders, not merely capital providers. Our unique model turns conventional private equity and VC on its head: we begin with our own business ideas, recruit management teams to execute them, and then capitalize on these ventures. The vast majority of the firm’s capital will be invested in ideas incubated internally.

We are seeking a talented Brand Designer to collaborate closely with the CEOs of our portfolio companies. In this role, you will help shape the visual identity and brand strategy of each company, bringing their vision to life through thoughtful design and cohesive storytelling. You’ll work directly with founders to craft impactful brand experiences—across logos, websites, and other key brand assets—that reflect each company’s mission, values, and market positioning.

What You’ll Do

  • Partner directly with CEOs and founding teams of portfolio companies to define and execute brand identity and visual direction
  • Design and develop brand assets including logos, typography, color palettes, and visual guidelines that align with each company’s unique mission and market
  • Support the build of clean, modern, and high-converting websites
  • Translate complex business ideas into clear, compelling visual narratives across digital and/or print mediums
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with marketing, product, and growth teams to ensure brand consistency across all touchpoints
  • Operate in a fast-paced, startup environment where you’ll potentially manage multiple projects at once and deliver high-quality work on tight timelines

Who You Are

  • A multidisciplinary designer with a strong portfolio showcasing branding, web design, and storytelling across early-stage startups or high-growth environments
  • Comfortable working directly with founders and senior stakeholders, with the ability to take abstract ideas and turn them into polished, strategic design work
  • Proficient in modern design and web tools (e.g. Figma, Webflow, Framer, Adobe Creative Suite) and able to move quickly from concept to execution
  • An excellent communicator with strong English skills—you’re clear, responsive, and thoughtful in both written and verbal communication

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
