Job Description:

Barron's Senior Economics and Federal Reserve Writer

Barron's is seeking an experienced reporter to cover the economy, writing sharp analyses of major economic news events they happen and enterprise stories that explain what those events mean for the broader economy, companies, financial markets, and the pocketbooks of ordinary Americans.

A primary responsibility will be to lead our coverage of the Federal Reserve. But we are also looking for someone who can do more than just cover news quickly. This person should be skilled at reporting and writing compelling stories based on travel around the country to talk with workers, the unemployed, or company executives to understand how economic events are playing out on the ground.

Given the critical nature of this topic for our readers, we are seeking only journalists who have experience working in a newsroom. This position can be based in either New York City or Washington, D.C., but this person must be willing to develop sources and attend major events in person at the Federal Reserve in Washington, and the Fed's annual summit in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Barron's strongly values teamwork, so the ability to collaborate with reporters, editors, and our visual journalists is a must.

Interested parties should send a resume and no more than 3 clips in PDF form to [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected], and apply through the link on this job posting.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coverage of the economy and the Federal Reserve in a distinctive way
  • Aptitude in crafting sharp and memorable stories headlines
  • Moving fast to cover breaking news
  • Strong collaboration with other writers in the newsroom.
  • Write jargon-free, clear financial prose
  • Top-notch news judgment

Qualifications:

  • At least five years of experience covering economics or business in a major newsroom
  • Facility with SEO and audience strategies
  • Ability to write breaking news and news analysis in real time
  • A track record of writing unique, engaging stories
  • Understanding of economics, economic data and economic news releases
  • Ability to develop and write enterprise stories in clear, compelling ways

You will:

  • Thrive in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Work well under pressure and with other members of the team
  • Be a skilled, insightful and compassionate interviewer
  • Be meticulous in your copy and ambitious in your reporting
  • Pitch creative and compelling story ideas

About the Role/Barron's:

You will write accessible, reader-friendly stories on a regular basis, and also craft longer features, both anticipating and analyzing consumer trends. You will report to the Barron's Economics Editor.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
